Chapter 10 - The Locket's SecretJust as the rim of the glass touched Lily's lips, her hand bumped against the edge of the table.
The silver heart pendant around her neck swung forward, its heavy metallic edge striking the rim of the crystal glass with a sharp, metallic clink.
The small latch on the side of the locket popped open.
Inside the tiny locket was not a photograph, but a micro-encapsulated glass vial—a fail-safe mechanism designed years ago by Clara herself. The moment the locket swung open under pressure, a tiny piece of folded, waterproof paper slipped out from behind the silver frame and fell directly into the glass of juice.
The moment the paper touched the liquid, the clear apple juice instantly turned a murky, unnatural dark violet.
Lily gasped, dropping the glass. It shattered on the marble floor, splashing the purple liquid across the white rugs.
"Grandpa!" Lily cried out in fear.
Arthur rushed over instantly, pulling Lily behind him. The music stopped, and the guests crowded around in shock.
Arthur looked down at the dark purple stain, then picked up the tiny piece of soaked paper from the shattered glass. Written in fading, elegant handwriting was Clara’s distinct script:
"If this paper turns dark, the drink is poisoned. They killed me, Dad. Protect my daughter."
Arthur’s eyes turned from shock to a terrifying, burning fury. He lifted his head and scanned the room, his eyes locking directly onto Julian, who stood frozen in horror near the pillar.
