Chapter 3 - The Phone CallThe ring lay on the cold marble floor.

Ten years. Ten years I had deliberately made myself small. Ten years I had allowed his mother to call me a charity case, allowed his board members to talk down to me, and allowed Caldwell to act like the master of the universe—all because I believed that protecting his reputation was more important than protecting my own pride.

I had built his pedestal. And tonight, he had used it to kick me into the dirt.

Something deep inside me—a spark of the woman I used to be before I took Caldwell’s name—became completely still. The quiet, submissive wife vanished in an instant.

I didn't cry. I didn't reach down to pick up the ring. I slowly raised my eyes, locking them onto Caldwell’s flushed face.

"You really think I'm nobody, don't you, Caldwell?" I asked softly.

Caldwell let out a harsh, arrogant laugh, shaking his head. "You're a former nobody who got lucky, Saraphina. And tonight, your luck ran out. Now get out before security drags you out."

I reached into my evening clutch, pulled out my private satellite phone, and pressed speed dial.

It rang once.

"Thaddius," a deep, crisp voice answered on the second ring. "I am on standby, ma'am."

"Execute the emergency board resolution," I said, my voice as smooth and lethal as polished ice. "Effective immediately, remove Caldwell Vance as CEO of Vance Global and freeze his corporate financial access."

Caldwell’s arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He frowned, his brows knitting together in confusion.

I continued without breaking eye contact with my husband. "Send security to the Greenwich estate tonight. Recover all three company-registered vehicles—the Maybach, the Cullinan, and the vintage Porsche. Lock down the property perimeter."

"Yes, ma'am," Thaddius replied instantly. "The corporate tactical and legal teams are already downstairs in the lobby."

"Good. End call."

I lowered the phone and placed it back into my bag.

For three seconds, absolute silence hung over the grand ballroom.

Then, Evelyn burst out into a loud, shrill laugh that echoed off the high ceilings.

"You expect us to believe that?!" Evelyn sneered, clutching her pearl necklace as if it were the funniest joke she had ever heard. "You called a fake number to pretend you have power? Oh, Caldwell, you married a delusional lunatic!"

Caldwell’s confidence returned in full force. A slow, condescending smile spread across his face as he shook his head in pity.

"Did you hire an actor to pretend you're important, Saraphina?" Caldwell mocked, stepping closer. "Is this your pathetic attempt at saving face? You don't own anything. You never have."

Sloan slipped her arm through Caldwell’s, leaning her head against his shoulder with a triumphant, malicious smirk. "It's honestly sad, Caldwell. She's completely lost her mind."

I looked at the three of them—Caldwell, his mother, and his mistress.

They still didn't understand.

Caldwell had spent ten years presenting Vance Global to Wall Street as his empire, his brainchild, his personal triumph. But he had forgotten the most fundamental truth of his own company.

Vance Global wasn't built on his capital. It was built on the fifty-five percent controlling interest held by Astraea Capital Holdings—a private, ultra-secretive institutional fund established decades ago with my family's old-money fortune.

Caldwell didn't own Vance Global. I owned Vance Global. And for ten years, I had simply allowed him to hold the title of CEO because he was my husband.

I walked forward, stepped over the platinum band on the floor, picked it up off the marble, and placed it casually on the edge of a nearby champagne table.

I looked Caldwell straight in the eye.

"Enjoy the next thirty minutes, Caldwell," I said quietly. "It's the last time you'll ever stand in this room as a powerful man."

Caldwell laughed loudly behind me as I turned my back and walked toward the exit. Evelyn’s shrill chuckles and Sloan’s quiet giggles followed me down the long, mirrored hallway.
