Chapter 6 - The Fall at The PlazaThe silence in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza was suffocating.

Caldwell stood frozen in the center aisle, his arm still halfway extended in the empty air. His face, flushed with alcohol and victory just moments ago, turned the color of damp chalk.

"Arthur..." Caldwell stammered, his voice cracking as he took a erratic step toward the Chairman. "What... what kind of joke is this? Madam President? What are you talking about?"

Arthur Pendelton didn't look at him. Instead, he stepped aside, allowing Thaddius to hand me a sleek glass tablet displaying the live SEC filing and corporate registry updates.

I tapped the screen once. Across the five giant projection displays around the ballroom—which had previously showcased Caldwell’s face and corporate statistics—the screen flickered and reformatted in high definition.

The new logo appeared: MONTGOMERY-ASTRAEA GLOBAL HOLDINGS.

Directly beneath it, in massive bold typography, was the live press release:

IMMEDIATE EXECUTIVE TERMINATION NOTICE Effective 21:30 EST, Caldwell Vance has been removed from all operational and executive roles at Vance Global due to systemic breach of fiduciary duty and unauthorized asset commingling. Saraphina Montgomery assumes direct control as Sole Director & Controlling Shareholder.

Gasps erupted across the room like a sudden squall. Investors, hedge fund directors, and journalists scrambled for their phones as market notifications began blaring simultaneously.

Evelyn rushed forward, her heels clicking loudly on the marble, her diamonds rattling against her neck. "This is illegal! This is a coup! My son built this company from a garage! You can't just take it!"

Thaddius stepped calmly into her path, his massive frame blocking her entirely. "Mrs. Vance, your son did not build this company in a garage. In 2016, Astraea Capital provided $150 million in seed funding, collateralized by Miss Montgomery’s private trust. Your son owned exactly five percent of non-voting sweat equity, contingent on his marriage to Miss Montgomery and his adherence to the corporate ethics charter."

Thaddius turned his cold gaze onto Caldwell. "Which you breached tonight."

Sloan quietly slipped two steps backward, her eyes darting toward the side exit. Her hand slowly slid off Caldwell’s elbow as she realized the sinking ship she had boarded.

I stepped forward, my cream tailored tuxedo sharp against the dim lighting, the Montgomery Diamond catching the chandeliers.

"You thought I was a charity case, Evelyn," I said quietly, looking past Thaddius at my mother-in-law. "You thought I ate your son's food and lived in your son's house. But every dollar that funded your lifestyle, your hamptons rentals, and your vanity charities came directly from my family's private dividends."

I turned my eyes onto Caldwell.

"Your corporate card was canceled five minutes ago, Caldwell," I said. "Your personal accounts were underwritten by Astraea guarantee notes. Those guarantees were revoked at 21:15. As of this moment, you owe the firm $4.2 million in unbudgeted corporate expense overages."
