Chapter 10 - The Fallen HouseWith shaking hands, Jonathan signed the annulment papers.

He staggered out of the Sterling Tower like a ghost, returning to NexoCloud’s office late that evening.
The office was dead silent. The Deloitte forensic accounting team had finished their initial sweep and departed, leaving behind a stack of formal seizure notices on his desk.
Sitting in his office chair was his father, Arthur Miller, and his brother, Chad. Florence was sitting in the corner, sobbing silently into a tissue.
"Dad..." Jonathan croaked, his voice hollow. "What are you doing here?"
Arthur Miller stood up. His face was thunderous, his dark eyes filled with absolute rage.
"The bank just froze our family line of credit, Jonathan," Arthur said, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Chad’s accounts in the Caymans were flagged by federal investigators two hours ago. What the hell did you do?!"
"I... I was trying to save the company, Dad," Jonathan stammered, backing away against the wall. "I forged some contracts... I thought Vanguard wouldn't notice..."
SMACK!
Arthur Miller struck his son across the face with a heavy, calloused fist—a blow far harder than the one Jonathan had dealt Charlotte two nights prior. Jonathan hit the floor, clutching his bleeding nose.
"You idiot!" Arthur roared. "You had a girl who owned half this city! You were married to a billionaire! All you had to do was treat her like a human being! And you and your damn mother threw her out over a bucket of dirty laundry?!"
Florence covered her face, weeping hysterically. "I didn't know! I didn't know she was rich!"
"That doesn't make it right, Florence!" Arthur yelled at his wife, his face purple with rage. "We are ruined! The federal auditors are coming tomorrow, the family business is bankrupt, and your son is going to federal prison!"
Jonathan lay on the cold office floor, blood dripping from his nose onto his shirt, staring up at the fluorescent lights.
He remembered the small, warm apartment in Baltimore. He remembered the smell of the chicken soup he used to bring her. He remembered holding her hand on her worn velvet sofa, listening to her talk about how much she hated being alone.
She had loved him. Genuinely, purely loved him.
She would have given him the world. She would have funded his dreams, protected his family, and stood by his side for the rest of his life.
And he had destroyed it all in five seconds—because he had wanted to prove he was the master of a house built on dirt.
High above the city, on the sixtieth floor of the Sterling Tower, Charlotte stood by her glass balcony, watching the night lights of Atlanta.
Her laptop beeped on the table behind her. A single notification appeared from Deloitte Forensic Services:
PRELIMINARY AUDIT FINDING: NEXOCLOUD INC. Evidence of systemic wire fraud ($18M fabricated revenue). Deal recommendation: DEFINITIVE REJECTION. Case forwarded to SEC / Department of Justice.
Charlotte didn't smile. She didn't feel a rush of victory.
She simply closed the laptop, walked over to her piano, and played a soft, quiet melody into the vast, beautiful silence of her home.
