Chapter 4 - The Bucket and the SlapThe reception ended at midnight.

The guests had departed, leaving the manor house quiet save for the distant hum of the estate’s air conditioning. Charlotte had changed out of her veil but remained in her cream silk wedding gown—a gown designed by a private atelier in Paris that had cost more than Jonathan’s entire wedding budget, though she had claimed she bought it off the rack at a bridal outlet.

She was sitting at the vanity in the master suite, untangling white flowers from her dark hair, when the bedroom door creaked open without a knock.

Florence entered.

In her hands, she dragged a heavy, blue plastic bucket. It sloshed sickeningly with every step, dripping murky, grayish water onto the room's plush beige carpet.

Drop.

The bucket hit the floor beside Charlotte’s heels with a dull, wet thud.

Inside the water floated a tangled mass of dirty laundry—heavy cotton socks, sweat-stained work shirts, and men's underwear.

Charlotte turned slowly in her chair, staring at the bucket, then up at her mother-in-law. "What is this?"

Florence crossed her arms, her lips pressed into a thin, triumphant line. "You're Jonathan's wife now. Women in this family take care of the men."

Charlotte blinked, waiting for the punchline. A joke, a bizarre hazing ritual, anything. "Excuse me?"

"Wash them by hand," Florence said, her voice dropping into a flat, authoritative cadence. "Arthur and Chad leave for the golf course at seven. Tomorrow morning, breakfast is on the table at six sharp. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and hot coffee."

A quiet, dangerous cold began to spread through Charlotte’s veins. The illusion was shattering, piece by piece, right before her eyes.

"I married Jonathan," Charlotte said, her voice terrifyingly quiet. "I didn't become the Miller family’s servant."

Florence’s face hardened instantly. "What did you say?"

Before Charlotte could repeat herself, Jonathan stepped into the room. He was flushed, his tie loosened, smelling strongly of bourbon. He looked at the bucket, then at his mother, and finally at Charlotte.

"Jonathan," Charlotte said, turning to her husband. "Your mother just dropped a bucket of dirty laundry on our bedroom floor."

Jonathan rubbed the back of his neck, refusing to make eye contact with Charlotte. "Just do what Mom says, Char."

Charlotte felt as if the floor had dropped out beneath her. "What?"

"It’s family tradition," Jonathan muttered, stepping closer. "My mother did it for years for my dad and uncles. It’s about showing respect to the household."

"You expect me to wash your father’s and brother’s underwear by hand?" Charlotte asked, her voice incredulous. "On our wedding night?"

"My mother did it," Jonathan repeated, his voice rising, defensive. "Are you saying you're too good for my family?"

"Then perhaps you should continue the tradition yourself," Charlotte replied coldly.

Florence let out a sharp, theatrical gasp. "Are you going to let your wife speak to you like that, Jonathan? On your first night as head of this house?"

The alcohol, the stress of his company, and his mother’s piercing voice combined into a dark spark behind Jonathan’s eyes. He lunged forward, grabbing Charlotte’s upper arm with a grip that left immediate red marks against her pale skin.

"Apologize to my mother," he snarled, his face inches from hers.

"Take your hand off me, Jonathan."

"Apologize!"

"No."

Jonathan’s arm snapped back.

SLAP.

The sound cracked through the quiet room like a gunshot.

The force of the blow snapped Charlotte’s head to the side. Her cheek burned with white-hot pain, and the copper taste of fresh blood filled her mouth where her tooth had cut the inside of her lip.

Silence descended on the bedroom.

Jonathan stood over her, breathing heavily, a flash of sudden horror crossing his eyes as he looked at his own hand.

Florence, however, did not look horrified. She smiled—a small, cruel, satisfied curve of her mouth.

"That’s how you teach a woman respect," Florence whispered smoothly.

Charlotte stood slowly. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. The pain in her face faded, replaced by an absolute, terrifying clarity. The gentle, loving man she thought she had married did not exist. He was a ghost, an actor who had played a role until he thought the contract was signed.

She looked down at the blue plastic bucket.

Florence thought Charlotte was bending down to submit. She leaned forward, expecting her new daughter-in-law to plunge her hands into the dirty water.

Instead, Charlotte gripped the thick plastic rim of the bucket with both hands, lifted it off the floor, and swung it with all her strength.

Ten gallons of cold, filthy, gray soapy water and floating men’s underwear slammed directly into Jonathan’s chest and face.

"Aaggh!" Jonathan yelled, staggering backward as the foul water drenched his custom tuxedo, his hair, and his face. He slipped on the wet carpet, falling hard onto his back, soaking in the filth.

Florence shrieked. "You crazy bitch!"

Charlotte set the empty bucket down with a soft clack. She wiped a tiny bead of blood from the corner of her swollen lip with the back of her hand.

May you like

"You will never touch me again," Charlotte said.

She turned around, picked up her pre-packed leather suitcase and her encrypted silver laptop bag from the closet, and walked straight out of the room.
