Two years after Jonathan’s conviction, the Sterling Foundation was thriving. Charlotte’s life had settled into a powerful, peaceful rhythm split between her executive duties at Vanguard Capital and her philanthropic work empowering women entrepreneurs across the country.
She had built a world where she felt completely safe—protected by high-rise glass walls, ironclad contracts, and top-tier security personnel.
Then came the letter from prison.
Charlotte sat in her office on the sixtieth floor of the Sterling Tower, staring at an envelope with a government seal. Unlike Jonathan’s previous desperate pleas, this letter was not addressed to her from him. It came directly from the warden at the Montgomery Federal Correctional Facility.
Dear Ms. Sterling-Vance,
We are writing to inform you that inmate Jonathan Miller #48209 has made multiple formal requests for an administrative victim-offender reconciliation session prior to his upcoming early parole review. Under federal guidelines, as the registered victim of the underlying assault charges filed during his arrest, you hold sole authority to accept or deny this meeting.
Charlotte stared at the document. She felt no fear—only a quiet, sudden realization.
For two years, she had moved forward, but a small part of her had kept Jonathan locked away in a box of memories, unresolved and lingering. She realized that stepping into that prison room wouldn't be for his sake; it would be the final, necessary step to close the ledger on her past forever.
