Chapter 18 - The New PartnerSix months later.

Vanguard Capital announced a historic $500 million joint venture with Vance & Sterling Global, an international clean-technology fund focused on green infrastructure across developing nations.
The lead negotiator for the European consortium was Julian Vance—a thirty-two-year-old former naval officer and brilliant venture capitalist from London, who also happened to be a distant, respected branch of Charlotte’s mother's family line.
Julian was tall, quiet, and possessed a razor-sharp mind for numbers, paired with an effortless, self-deprecating humor.
During their four months of intense contract negotiations, Julian treated Charlotte with absolute professional respect. He didn't flinch at her billions, nor was he intimidated by her reputation as an unyielding corporate president. He challenged her strategies in the boardroom, made her laugh during long late-night strategy sessions over takeout sushi, and never once asked her to dim her light.
One evening, after finalizing the $500 million deal parameters in her executive suite, Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Atlanta skyline.
"You know, Charlotte," Julian said, turning to her with a warm, genuine smile, "most people in this industry look at you and see an untouchable fortress."
Charlotte leaned against her marble desk, holding her teacup. "And what do you see?"
"I see someone who built a fortress to protect a very rare, very brave heart," Julian answered softly. "I'm not asking to break your walls down, Charlotte. I'm just asking if I can stand on the parapet with you."

Charlotte looked at him—at his clear, honest eyes that demanded nothing from her wealth and respected everything about her strength.
For the first time in years, Charlotte smiled without a single shadow of doubt in her mind.
