Spring had returned to Georgia, turning the rolling green hills outside Atlanta into a sea of blooming white dogwoods.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Charlotte stood on the grounds of a restored historic estate in North Georgia—a property she had quietly purchased through an anonymous entity two years prior.
It was the very manor house where her wedding to Jonathan had collapsed five years ago.
However, the house was no longer a monument to the Miller family's vanity. Charlotte had completely gutted the interior, transforming the grand estate into the Sterling Sanctuary for Families—a state-of-the-art emergency shelter and legal advocacy campus for women and children escaping domestic abuse and financial coercion.
Where Florence’s blue plastic bucket had once sloshed with filthy water, a beautiful marble fountain now bubbled in the central courtyard, surrounded by blooming white roses.
Evelyn Grant walked up beside Charlotte, holding a clipboard filled with opening-day statistics.
"The state grant came through this morning, Charlotte," Evelyn said, smiling brightly. "We have twenty-four families arriving next week. They’ll have full legal representation, mental health counseling, and job placement services."
From down the driveway, a sleek car pulled up. Julian stepped out, carrying their one-year-old daughter, Clara, in his arms. The little girl laughed, reaching her tiny hands out toward the sunshine.
Julian walked up to Charlotte, slipping his free arm around her waist and kissing her forehead gently. "The opening ceremony is about to start, President Sterling-Vance. The governor is waiting for your speech."
