Chapter 9 - The Confrontation at the TowerBy four o'clock that afternoon, Jonathan was desperate.

He drove his BMW recklessly through downtown Atlanta, parking illegally in front of the glittering glass spire of the Sterling Tower. Ignoring the security guards at the lobby turnstiles, he rushed toward the private executive elevators.

"Sir! You can't go up there without a badge!" a security guard yelled, grabbing Jonathan’s shoulder.

"I’m her husband!" Jonathan shouted, pulling out his marriage certificate and shoving it into the guard's face. "Look! I’m Charlotte Sterling-Vance's husband! Let me up!"

The chief security officer stepped forward, looking at Jonathan’s disheveled suit and crazed eyes with calm disdain. "Mr. Miller, President Sterling-Vance left explicit instructions. You are barred from the building. If you do not leave immediately, we will call the Atlanta Police Department."

"Char!" Jonathan screamed at the top of his lungs toward the high ceilings of the lobby. "Charlotte! Please! Just talk to me for five minutes! I’m sorry! I’m so sorry!"

From the mezzanine level above, Evelyn Grant stepped out of the private legal suite, looking down at the commotion with cold disgust. She gestured to two beefy, private security officers standing beside her.

"Escort Mr. Miller to Conference Room B on the concourse level," Evelyn ordered smoothly. "I will speak to him."

Five minutes later, Jonathan sat shaking in a sterile glass conference room. The door opened, and Evelyn walked in, setting a thick leather briefcase on the table.

Jonathan jumped up. "Where is Char? Where is my wife?!"

"Sit down, Mr. Miller," Evelyn said, her voice like ice. "Charlotte is currently managing a three-billion-dollar acquisition in London via video conference. She has no time for you."

"Evelyn, please!" Jonathan begged, tears finally spilling over his bloodshot eyes. "It was all a huge misunderstanding! My mother... she pushed me! I was drunk! I love Charlotte! I’ve loved her for two years! I didn't know she was... I didn't know who she was!"

Evelyn let out a short, quiet laugh that sent chills down Jonathan’s spine.

"That is the most pathetic thing you could have said, Jonathan," Evelyn observed quietly. "You only care about who she is because of what she owns. When you thought she was an orphaned assistant making fifty thousand dollars a year, you felt entitled to slap her face and let your mother treat her like a dog."

"I was wrong!" Jonathan sobbed, dropping to his knees beside the conference table. "Please... call off the Deloitte audit. If they keep digging into the offshore files, they're going to destroy my company. Tell Char I’ll sign whatever she wants! I’ll apologize on my knees to her!"

Evelyn looked down at the weeping man with unyielding contempt.

She opened her briefcase and pulled out a single, crisp paper document.

"This is a petition for an immediate Annulment based on fraud and physical assault," Evelyn said, placing the document on the table in front of him. "It includes a ironclad Non-Disclosure Agreement and a full waiver of any spousal claims to the Sterling Trust."

Jonathan looked up, trembling. "And... and the audit? Will she stop the audit if I sign?"

Evelyn leaned down, her face inches from his.

"Charlotte didn't order the audit to ruin you, Jonathan," Evelyn whispered. "She recused herself completely. The audit is standard Vanguard protocol for any company under review. Your company is being audited because you asked for $120 million of her institution's money."

Evelyn slid a silver fountain pen across the table.

"Sign the annulment, Jonathan. Because if you don't, I will personally hand the police report of what you did on your wedding night to every news station in North America."
