Chapter 14 - The Final MeetingA month later, pre-trial motions began at the United States District Court in Atlanta.

Jonathan sat at the defense table in a navy blue suit that hung loosely off his weight-loss-shrunken frame. Beside him sat a court-appointed public defender; his father’s money had run out after paying off initial corporate liabilities.

Across the aisle sat the prosecution team, backed by Evelyn Grant, who appeared as a formal observer representing Vanguard Capital's legal interests.

Just before the judge entered the courtroom, the side doors opened.

Charlotte walked in quietly, escorted by two private security personnel. She wore a tailored black coat and sat in the front row of the gallery, directly behind the prosecution table.

Jonathan turned his head, his eyes widening as he saw her. His breath caught in his throat. It was the first time he had seen her in person since he stood soaked and screaming in the driveway of the manor house.

She looked breathtaking—distant, powerful, and completely out of his reach.

During the hearing, the judge called upon Vanguard's legal representative to present their position regarding restitution and sentencing guidelines.

Evelyn stood up, adjusting her glasses.

"Your Honor," Evelyn began, her voice carrying absolute authority through the silent courtroom. "Vanguard Capital has reviewed the defendant’s plea for corporate leniency. We wish to state on the record that Vanguard takes no personal vengeance against Mr. Miller."

Jonathan’s eyes sparked with a tiny, desperate flicker of hope.

"However," Evelyn continued smoothly, "Vanguard Capital manages the pension funds of public servants, teachers, and firefighters. Mr. Miller’s actions were deliberate, fraudulent, and calculated to deceive institutional stewards. Therefore, Vanguard firmly requests that the court apply the full, statutory sentencing guidelines without mitigation."

The flicker of hope in Jonathan’s eyes died instantly. His head dropped onto the defense table.

Charlotte watched from the gallery, her face serene and unreadable. She didn't feel joy in his destruction, nor did she feel pity. It was simply justice—impartial, unyielding, and absolute.
