Chapter 1 - The Green Light

Sarah heard Leo cry from the kitchen.

Not his hungry cry.

Not the tired little complaint he made before naps.

This was different.

Sharp.

Frightened.

Sarah dropped the polishing cloth and hurried through the corridor toward the bright drawing room.

“Leo?”

Another cough.

She pushed through the doorway.

Then stopped.

Victoria stood beside the crib holding a heavy steam iron.

A thin cloud drifted upward.

Leo was awake, crying and coughing.

Victoria pressed the steam button again.

Sarah’s stomach turned.

“What are you doing?”

Victoria spun around.

For one second her expression showed panic.

Then it disappeared.

“I’m removing a wrinkle from my scarf.”

Sarah looked across the room.

The scarf lay over an armchair several yards away.

“Your scarf is over there.”

Victoria lowered the iron.

“You’re mistaken.”

Sarah moved past her.

Leo reached toward Sarah immediately.

She lifted him.

His face was flushed from crying, and he pressed himself against her uniform.

“It’s all right,” Sarah whispered.

Victoria’s voice hardened.

“Give him to me.”

Sarah turned.

“No.”

Victoria stared.

“What did you say?”

“He needs to calm down.”

“You’re employed to clean this house.”

“And he’s a baby.”

“Give him to me.”

“No.”

Victoria grabbed Sarah’s arm.

Sarah shifted Leo away from her.

“Don’t.”

“You have no authority here.”

“Touch him again and I’ll call Mr. Ethan.”

Victoria smiled.

“Who do you think Ethan will believe?”

Footsteps sounded outside.

Victoria released Sarah instantly.

Ethan appeared.

He had returned earlier than expected from a meeting.

His expression changed when he saw Leo crying in Sarah’s arms.

“What happened?”

Victoria dropped the iron.

Then she began crying.

“Ethan!”

She rushed toward him.

“She attacked me.”

Sarah stared.

“What?”

Victoria pointed.

“I was trying to iron my scarf and Sarah burst in screaming. She grabbed Leo and pushed me.”

“That’s not true.”

Victoria turned.

“You liar.”

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“She was standing over the crib with the iron.”

Victoria gasped dramatically.

“You actually expect him to believe that?”

Ethan stared from one woman to the other.

Then at Leo.

The baby clung tightly to Sarah.

“Give me my son.”

Sarah immediately handed Leo to him.

Ethan held the infant carefully.

Leo buried his face against his father.

Victoria wiped tears.

“Fire her.”

Sarah’s heart sank.

She needed this job.

But Leo mattered more.

“If you want me gone, I’ll leave.”

Victoria smiled.

Sarah continued:

“But first check the baby monitor.”

Silence.

Victoria’s face changed.

Sarah had noticed the small green light above the fireplace.

The camera pointed toward the crib.

Victoria followed her gaze.

Her lips parted.

Ethan slowly reached into his pocket.

He opened the baby-monitor application.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Ethan, don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“It sometimes records incorrectly.”

“Records incorrectly?”

“It glitches.”

Sarah said nothing.

Ethan opened the timeline.

11:42 a.m.

He pressed play.

The recording began.

Leo sleeping.

Victoria entering.

No scarf.

No cleaning.

She carried the iron directly toward the crib.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

On the video, Victoria leaned over Leo.

She pressed the steam button.

Leo woke coughing.

Victoria whispered:

“Stop crying.”

Then she pressed it again.

Sarah appeared seconds later.

The argument followed exactly as Sarah described.

Ethan watched until the end.

Nobody spoke.

Victoria finally whispered:

“It isn’t what it looks like.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What does it look like?”

“I was trying to—”

“What?”

She had no answer.

Ethan turned toward Sarah.

“Call Dr. Hayes.”

Then:

“And call security.”

Victoria stepped backward.

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“You’re throwing me out?”

“I’m separating you from Leo until I understand what happened.”

“I’m your fiancée.”

“That does not give you access to my child.”

Victoria’s face transformed.

The tears stopped.

“You’re choosing the maid over me?”

Ethan glanced at the phone.

“No.”

“I’m choosing evidence.”

That frightened Victoria more than anger would have.

She grabbed her handbag.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

Ethan did not answer.

Security escorted her toward the front door.

Before leaving, Victoria turned toward Sarah.

The look in her eyes was not embarrassment.

It was hatred.

Sarah felt a chill.

Then Ethan’s phone vibrated.

A notification from the baby-monitor cloud service.

ARCHIVED RECORDING RECOVERED.

Ethan frowned.

“What is that?”

Sarah looked over.

The system had automatically restored older recordings from a deleted folder.

Twenty-three clips.

Deleted manually during the previous six weeks.

Ethan opened the oldest.

The timestamp was 2:14 a.m.

Victoria entered Leo’s nursery while everyone else slept.

She stood over the crib.

But she was not holding an iron.

She was holding Sarah’s house key.

And she placed it underneath Leo’s mattress.

Sarah stared.

“That’s my missing key.”

Ethan looked at her.

Then at the screen.

The next clip showed Victoria taking cash from a drawer in Ethan’s study.

She carried it into Sarah’s room.

She hid it beneath Sarah’s bed.

Sarah whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Ethan’s face became pale.

Victoria had not merely mistreated Leo.

She had been building evidence against Sarah.

May you like

And whatever she planned had started long before that morning.
