Chapter 13 - Marcus Steps Down
Marcus had spent his adult life preparing to run Hale Meridian.
At forty-one, he stepped down as interim CEO after restructuring.
Why?
Not forced.
He said company needed leader without family entanglement.
Board appointed Naomi Chen, former operations chief.
Marcus remained shareholder and non-executive director for one term.
Margaret called from prison.
“You surrendered.”
He replied:
“I stopped pretending I was entitled.”
She hung up.
Marcus cried afterward.
Ethan found him in empty office.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
They laughed faintly.
Marcus admitted envy.
Ethan had Amelia.
Leo.
Life outside company.
Marcus had work.
Mother’s approval.
Now both gone.
“What am I if I’m not CEO?”
Ethan said:
“I don’t know.”
“Helpful.”
“You can find out.”
Marcus began teaching? Maybe later. For now, he volunteered with employee training, no title? Could be. He started small consultancy eventually.
Then he apologized to Leo though child too young to understand.
Sarah told him:
“Apologies to babies mostly change adults.”
Marcus nodded.
“Then I need it.”
He placed no burden on Leo.
Good.
Then Sarah’s education.
She began classes.
Her classmates knew media story.
Some treated her as celebrity.
She hated.
One asked:
“Why are you studying if you’re rich?”
Sarah answered:
“Money solved tuition, not purpose.”
Good.
She focused child advocacy.
Later internship at family-support nonprofit.
No use of Hale name.
Then Ethan moved out of mansion.
Too many memories.
He sold? The house belonged him. He chose smaller house with garden.
Staff reduced.
No live-in maid.
Professional childcare shifts.
Sarah visited as friend.
Drawing room where incident happened remained before sale.
Ethan entered once.
The iron was gone as evidence.
Crib moved.
Fireplace camera removed.
He looked at green-light location.
That tiny light changed everything.
But he did not preserve device as relic.
Police returned after case.
He gave camera to electronics recycling after legal archive copied footage.
No shrine.
Then he found one object behind radiator.
Victoria’s yellow hair clip.
He threw it away.
Not every object needs meaning.
Then property sale proceeds partly placed in Leo trust? Ethan’s own property, fine.
He bought normal house.
Leo’s room bright.
Camera installed for safety, but transparent.
Sarah joked:
“Please don’t make cameras family religion.”
Ethan laughed.
“Fair.”
Then Ethan’s therapy.
He began again.
Not because court.
Because Amelia’s letter called his avoidance.
He learned:
* conflict delayed becomes power for manipulator
* calm people can be wrong
* emotional people can be truthful
* delegating isn’t surrendering responsibility.
He told Sarah one day:
“I used to think trusting people meant not checking.”
Sarah said:
“Trust and checking can coexist.”
Exactly.
Then Margaret requested family therapy from prison.
Ethan agreed after months.
Video session.
She looked older.
“I miss Leo.”
“I know.”
“Will he know me?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Age-appropriate truth.”
Margaret flinched.
“What truth?”
“That you loved him and made serious choices that put control ahead of safety.”
She cried.
“Do you have to say that?”
“Yes.”
No legacy editing.
Then she asked:
“Will you tell him I was more than this?”
“Yes.”
That mattered.
People more than worst acts.
Without hiding them.
Then she said:
