Chapter 17 - Leo Asks About the Camera
Leo was eleven when he found old article online.
Kids search family names.
He came home.
“Dad.”
Ethan knew tone.
“What?”
“Why does internet say Victoria tried to hurt me?”
Silence.
Time.
Ethan had prepared.
Sarah was contacted later but not used as primary storyteller.
Ethan sat with Leo.
He explained:
* Victoria was his fiancée.

Leo listened.
“Was I hurt?”
“You were frightened and coughing, but doctors said you were okay.”
“Did Sarah save me?”
“She protected you.”
“Did you believe her?”
“I checked evidence.”
Leo frowned.
“You didn’t believe her first?”
“I didn’t know.”
Ethan decided honesty.
“For a few minutes I didn’t know who was telling truth.”
“Then camera?”
“Yes.”
Leo looked toward fireplace in current home.
No camera.
“Do you still have video?”
“Legal archive does.”
“Can I see?”
“Not now.”
“Why?”
“Because seeing yourself frightened as a baby may not help you.”
Leo thought.
“Can I later?”
“When you’re older, we decide.”
Good.
Then Leo asked:
“Why did Grandma help Victoria?”
Ethan explained company and trust.
Leo sighed.
“Adults are weird.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Does Sarah know?”
“She lived it.”
Leo called her.
Sarah was now licensed family-support social worker.
“Did you really yell at Victoria?”
Sarah laughed.
“Yes.”
“Cool.”
“Not cool.”
She explained fear.
No hero glamor.
“I was scared too.”
“You still did it.”
“Yes.”
That is courage.
Leo asked:
“Why were you maid if you had money?”
Sarah smiled.
“I didn’t know I had money.”
“Grandma stole it?”
“Used it wrongly.”
“Complicated.”
“Very.”
Then Leo said:
“I’m glad you were there.”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“Me too.”
No identity burden.
Then Ethan wrote in journal afterward.
Not secret.
He planned to give Leo adult record eventually.
He had learned no hidden letters.
When Leo turned sixteen, he could access age-appropriate family archive with support.
No surprises at forty.
Then Grace brought Amelia’s sealed letter for adulthood.
Still sealed.
Leo knew it existed.
Transparency without premature content.
Good.
Then Margaret, now eighty, heard Leo had searched.
She asked Ethan:
“Does he hate me?”
“I don’t know.”
She cried.
“Can I explain?”
“Only if he asks.”
She nodded.
Later Leo did.
Grandmother and grandson talked.
Margaret did not say “I did it for you.”
Important.
She said:
“I did it because I was afraid of losing control.”
Leo listened.
Then:
“Okay.”
Not forgiveness declaration.
