Chapter 5 - Amelia’s USB
The USB contained seven folders.
Amelia had organized everything.
Bank records.
Board minutes.
Emails.
Copies of trust agreements.
And one video.
Ethan waited until Leo was asleep upstairs.
Sarah remained nearby only because Amelia’s letter specifically mentioned her.
Rebecca connected the drive to an offline forensic laptop.
Video opened.
Jonathan Hale appeared.
Ethan’s father.
Recorded eleven months before his death.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably himself.
“Ethan.”
He looked directly into camera.
“If Amelia gives you this, then I failed to fix something before I ran out of time.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
Jonathan continued.
“Hale Meridian borrowed against several family holdings during the 2021 downturn.”
Legal.
Board approved.
But Margaret arranged an additional private line using future dividend rights belonging partly to Amelia and ultimately Leo.
Without proper consent.
Why?
To hide losses in a failed resort-development project called North Crest.
Marcus knew North Crest lost money.
He did not know Leo-related collateral was used.
Margaret did.
Jonathan discovered.
He confronted her.
She argued company survival justified it.
He demanded reversal.
Margaret promised.
Then Jonathan became ill.
Before legal unwind completed, he died.
No suggestion she caused his death.
Just timing.
But afterward Margaret buried records.
Amelia found them while settling Jonathan’s estate.
She confronted Margaret privately.
Margaret threatened—not physical harm—but litigation.
She said exposing transaction would bankrupt company and destroy thousands of jobs.
Amelia hesitated.
She did not want collapse.
So she created Leo’s protective trust amendment.
Jonathan said on video:
“Your mother believes Hale Meridian is the family.”
“She is wrong.”
“The company is a company.”
“Leo is a child.”
Ethan closed eyes.
Same lesson arriving again.
Then another folder.
Emails between Margaret and Victoria.
Dating eight months earlier.
Before Ethan proposed.
Victoria had approached Margaret first.

Ethan felt cold.
Their relationship had not begun organically?
He and Victoria met at charity gala nine months ago.
She seemed charming.
Margaret encouraged.

She knew trust structures.
Margaret introduced them intentionally.

Ethan needs stability. Marriage solves household optics and creates path to consolidated guardianship.
Victoria:
What about Sarah?
Margaret:
Temporary problem.
Ethan stared at Sarah.
She looked sick.
Another:
Victoria:
If Sarah is discredited, will court accept me?
Margaret:
After marriage, likely. Marcus can support.
Marcus had not yet agreed.
Maybe Margaret assumed.
Then:
Ethan still listens to Amelia’s memory too much.
Victoria replied:
That changes once I’m in the house.
Ethan stood.
He could not sit.
Their engagement had been partially engineered.
Maybe Victoria developed feelings later.
Didn’t matter yet.
Then a financial spreadsheet.
North Crest losses.
$37 million.
Hidden through layered loans.
Margaret’s current plan:
Use Leo’s voting shares to block company sale and approve refinancing that would bury old losses for another decade.
Marcus wanted block sale to preserve company too, but he didn’t know this.
Ethan called him.
Marcus came immediately.
He watched video.
Read emails.

“She used me.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at Sarah.
“And I helped her.”
“Yes.”
Marcus sat.
“I thought company needed votes.”
Ethan said nothing.
Marcus continued:
“I gave Victoria trust pages.”
“Yes.”
“She used them to target Sarah.”
“Yes.”
Marcus cried.
“I didn’t know.”
“I believe you didn’t know all.”
That distinction mattered.
“Doesn’t mean you did nothing wrong.”
Marcus nodded.
“Agreed.”
Then Rebecca found another email.
Margaret to Victoria:
If Ethan resists after marriage, use Amelia psychiatric correspondence.
Ethan froze.
Amelia had seen grief counselor during illness.
Private.
Margaret somehow possessed records.
Possibly illegally obtained.
Victoria planned to frame Amelia as mentally unstable too—if needed to challenge trust amendment.
Attacking dead woman’s competence.
Rebecca said:
“They’ll argue amendment invalid because she was medicated or distressed.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Was she competent?”
“Yes.”
“I was there for signing.”
Good.
Then Sarah asked:
“Why frame me before wedding?”
They were three months away.
Rebecca answered:
“Because if Sarah disappears first, no one connects later guardianship fight to Victoria.”
Make Sarah look thief.
Unsafe caregiver.
Then fire.
After wedding, Victoria becomes stepmother.
If Ethan is declared impaired, Victoria petitions.
Margaret gets Leo voting representation through her.
A chain.
Then Detective Price called.
Victoria wanted to speak.
Through lawyer.
She claimed Margaret coerced her.
Ethan almost laughed.
Everyone blaming upward.
But police needed facts.
Victoria offered proof:
* Margaret paid her $250,000 through consulting contract.

* instructed her to collect evidence against Sarah.

But Victoria admitted steam incident was not instructed.
That was hers.
She lost control because Sarah refused to leave.
Important.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Margaret has another person inside the house.”
Ethan frowned.
“Who?”
Victoria refused unless cooperation deal.
Detective Price said prosecutors decide.
She finally named:
Mrs. Doyle.
The housekeeper supervisor.
Seventy-two.
Worked for Hale family thirty-five years.
Sarah’s boss.
Mrs. Doyle had been reporting Sarah’s movements to Margaret.
Sarah went pale.
Mrs. Doyle was the person who recommended her job originally.
She had also worked for Amelia.
If true, betrayal deep.
Then security checked logs.
Mrs. Doyle had accessed nursery corridor every night several times.
One deleted monitor clip showed her removing something from behind fireplace.
A memory card.
She had been deleting recordings for Victoria.
But apparently missed cloud archive.
The green light had saved more than one moment.
