Chapter 10: The Final Reckoning

The door creaked inward, revealing a silhouette standing in the pale amber glow of the emergency exit signs.

It was not a guard.

Victor Rossi stepped into the room, his gray maintenance jumpsuit stained with oil, his face contorted into a mask of pure, unbridled malice. In his right hand, he held the snub-nosed revolver, its barrel pointed directly at Marcus’s chest. Behind him in the hallway, two security guards lay motionless on the floor.

"Hello, Marcus," Victor said, his voice raspy, trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and exhaustion. "Did you really think a few guards could keep me out of a building I built?"

Khloe let out a low gasp, pulling Maya tight against her chest, shrinking back into the pillows of the hospital bed. Julian stepped sideways, attempting to move toward the wall alarm, but Victor instantly snapped the gun toward him.

"Don't move, Doctor!" Victor snarled. "One step, and you die first!"

Marcus didn't move an inch. His body remained a solid shield in front of his wife and child, his eyes locked onto Victor’s trembling hand. His own weapon was raised, aimed directly at Victor’s forehead, but he couldn't take the shot—not with Khloe and a newborn baby directly in the line of fire if Victor managed to pull the trigger as he fell.

"Lower the gun, Victor," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, dead of all emotion. "It’s over. Your daughter is in custody. Your assets are gone. Coming here only guarantees you die in a cold hallway."

"I am already dead!" Victor screamed, tears of rage springing to his eyes. "You destroyed my family! You ruined my daughter! You took everything I built over forty years and turned it into dust!"

"Your daughter tried to murder my pregnant wife!" Marcus shot back, his voice cutting through the room like a steel blade. "She brought this on herself! And you... you enabled her every step of the way!"

"She was my child!" Victor roared, his finger tightening visibly around the trigger. "And now... I’m going to take yours!"

Victor shifted his aim, pointing the heavy barrel past Marcus’s shoulder directly at Khloe and the crying infant on the bed.

Time seemed to freeze into slow motion.

Khloe squeezed her eyes shut, turning her body completely around the baby, preparing to take the bullet in her back.

BANG!

A deafening gunshot shattered the quiet of the suite. Glass from a nearby flower vase exploded across the floor.

A sharp gasp echoed through the dark room.

Victor Rossi froze, his eyes widening in utter disbelief. He looked down at his own chest, where a small, dark hole was rapidly spreading across his gray jumpsuit. The revolver slipped from his lifeless fingers, clattering onto the marble floor.

Behind Victor, standing in the doorway with a smoking tactical pistol in his hand, was Elijah Vance.

Victor collapsed to his knees, his hands clutching at his chest, before falling forward onto the cold marble floor—dead before his body even settled.

Elijah stepped over the body, his weapon still raised as he scanned the room to ensure no other threats remained. "Suite clear!" he called out into his radio. "Medical team needed on Floor 8 immediately!"

Marcus didn't waste a second. He dropped his gun, turned around, and wrapped his large arms tightly around Khloe and baby Maya, pulling them both into his chest as Khloe burst into heavy, shuddering sobs.

"It’s over, Khloe," Marcus whispered, his voice shaking as he pressed his face into her hair, tears finally spilling from his own eyes. "It’s over. I’ve got you. I’ve got both of you."
