Chapter 3: Shadows on the Operating Table

The rhythmic, mechanical beep of the heart monitor was the only sound echoing through the sterile expanse of Operating Room 4. Flashing surgical lamps cast an unyielding, harsh glare over the team of specialists moving in disciplined precision around Khloe Thorne.
Outside, the red "IN SURGERY" sign glowed like an open wound in the darkened corridor. Marcus Thorne stood motionless against the frosted glass, his knuckles white as he gripped the chrome railing. The pristine cuffs of his black tuxedo were stained with a subtle, horrifying smudge of dried blood—Khloe’s blood.
Inside the suite, Dr. Julian Bennett—Khloe’s uncle and Chief of Trauma Operations—stood over the operating table, his hands steady despite the cold rage burning in his chest.
"Vitals are dropping, Dr. Bennett. Systolic is down to eighty," the anesthesiologist announced, her voice tight with controlled urgency. "Fetal heart rate is decelerating. We’re losing the baby’s pulse."
"Prepare for an emergency C-section," Dr. Bennett commanded, his sharp eyes never leaving the monitor. "I want two units of O-negative on standby. Move now."
The surgical team mobilized instantly. Scalpels glided under blinding lights, cutting through layers of fabric and skin to reach the fragile life hanging by a thread. Every second felt like an eternity. Julian’s mind raced back to the security footage he had just handed over to the police—the deliberate, brutal arc of Isabella Rossi’s heel driving into Khloe’s abdomen. It hadn't been an act of passion; it had been an execution attempt.
Through the observation window above, Marcus watched the flurry of blue gowns. The billionaire who had built a multi-billion-dollar logistics empire, who could alter international markets with a single phone call, had never felt so utterly powerless. His phone vibrated violently against his thigh—a relentless stream of calls from Rossi Corporation attorneys attempting to establish a blackout, paired with frantic inquiries from his own board of directors.
He pulled the phone from his pocket, his thumb hovering over the screen. He didn't answer. Instead, he dialed his head of private security, Elijah Vance.
"Marcus," Vance’s low voice cut through the line on the first ring. "We have eyes on the Rossi estate. Her father, Victor Rossi, is already assembling a legal team. They’re trying to impound the hospital's server before the footage reaches the District Attorney."
"Too late," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it lacked any human warmth. "Julian already handed the physical drive directly to federal investigators. Vance, I don't want a single Rossi asset touching the public market tomorrow morning. Freeze their credit lines through our banking partners. Freeze everything."
"Consider it done," Vance replied. "And what about Isabella?"
Marcus looked down at his blood-stained cuff. "Let her father spend millions trying to bail her out tonight. Make sure the media gets every frame of her in those handcuffs first."
A sudden, high-pitched alarm pierced the quiet of the hallway. Marcus whipped his head back toward the surgical window. Inside, the monitors flashed amber.
"We have internal hemorrhaging!" a nurse shouted.
Dr. Bennett’s voice remained razor-sharp above the panic. "Suction! Clamp the uterine artery. Hold on, Khloe... hold on."
Marcus pressed his forehead against the glass, his breath fogging the cold pane. The weight of his own negligence hit him like a physical blow. He had seen Isabella hovering around their lives for weeks. He had dismissed her lingering glances and toxic remarks as the desperate bids of a rejected socialite. He had let his guard down because they were in a secure, private medical wing. He had failed to protect his wife. He had failed to protect his unborn child.
Inside the room, a faint, weak sound broke through the sterile chaos—a tiny, raspy gasp followed by a thin, desperate cry.

"We have a pulse!" the neonatologist called out, lifting a tiny, fragile infant wrapped in warm blankets. "Incubator, now! Transfer to NICU!"
Dr. Bennett closed his eyes for a single second, letting out a long, shuddering breath before turning back to his niece. "Child is stabilized for transport. Now let's save the mother."
