Chapter 9: Into the Shadows

The underground parking garage beneath Metro General Hospital was quiet, filled only with the low hum of heavy ventilation shafts and the faint drip of water from old pipes.
A dark utility van pulled quietly into a secluded loading bay reserved for laundry service. The driver’s door opened, and a man in a gray maintenance jumpsuit stepped out, pulling a low-brimmed cap over his eyes. Beneath the collar of his uniform, the worn, pale skin of Victor Rossi was barely recognizable.
He pulled a master keycard—an old master pass from his construction days that had long been removed from active digital registries—and swiped it against an unlit access panel near an industrial elevator.
The small LED light above the reader flickered from red to dull green.
Click.
The heavy steel doors slid open with a soft hiss. Victor stepped inside, reaching out to press the manual override switch for the sub-basement levels.
Meanwhile, on the eighth floor, the atmosphere inside Khloe’s private recovery suite was serene. Soft music played from a Bluetooth speaker near the window, and the room was filled with white roses delivered by close friends and business associates.
Khloe sat up in bed, cradling her tiny daughter, Maya, who had finally been cleared for a temporary nursing session outside the NICU under special supervision. Marcus sat beside her on the bed, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, watching the quiet scene with a warmth he had never known existed inside himself.
"Look at her, Marcus," Khloe whispered, her finger gently tracing the baby’s soft cheek. "She has your chin."
"Poor girl," Marcus teased softly, a rare, genuine smile lighting up his dark eyes. "She’s going to have a hard time dealing with suitors when she grows up."
"She won't have to worry about suitors," Marcus added, his voice dropping into a tender, protective register. "Her father will make sure of that."
A soft knock at the door broke the quiet moment. Dr. Julian Bennett stepped into the room, holding a medical chart, followed by two armed guards who remained posted just outside the threshold.
"How is our little miracle doing?" Julian asked, stepping closer to check Maya’s heart monitor readings.
"She’s perfect, Uncle Julian," Khloe said warmly.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark.
The soft music stopped. The digital monitors beeped once in warning before shifting to emergency battery power, casting a faint, eerie amber glow across the room.
Marcus was on his feet in a fraction of a second, his instincts sharp as a razor. He placed himself directly between the bed and the entrance door, his hand reaching instinctively into his suit jacket.
"What happened?" Khloe asked, her hands instantly tightening around her baby.
"Main power grid failure," Julian said, his brow furrowing as he pulled out a small tactical flashlight. "The backup generators should kick in within three seconds..."
Five seconds passed. Ten seconds passed. The main lights remained dead.

Through the heavy wood of the suite door, the faint sound of a muffled scuffle echoed down the hallway, followed by a sharp, metallic thud.
"Stay behind me!" Marcus commanded, pulling his own concealed firearm from his holster as the door slowly clicked open.
