Chapter 5: The Awakening

The Intensive Care Unit was quiet, save for the rhythm of oxygen pumps and soft digital telemetry. Sunbeams filtered through the heavy blinds of the corner suite, illuminating dust motes dancing in the sterile air.

Marcus sat beside the bed, his head resting in his hands. His suit jacket was tossed over a chair, his sleeves rolled up, revealing dark veins pulsing along his arms. He hadn't left Khloe’s side for sixteen hours.

His fingers were wrapped carefully around hers—pale, thin, and wired with IV needles.

A slight, subtle shift in her grip made him freeze.

Marcus raised his head instantly. Khloe’s long eyelashes fluttered, casting small shadows against her pale cheeks. A soft groan escaped her dry lips as she slowly opened her eyes, trying to adjust to the blinding morning light.

"Khloe..." Marcus whispered, his voice hoarse, trembling with an emotion he had kept locked away for hours. "Khloe, can you hear me?"

Her gaze drifted around the room, confused and unfocused, before finally settling on his exhausted face. The memory of the luxury suite—the cold marble, the shattering glass, the agonizing impact of the red heel—flooded back into her eyes like a tidal wave of terror.

Her hand instinctively snatched toward her abdomen. Her breath hitched into a sharp, panicked gasp.

"My baby..." she choked out, tears instantly brimming in her eyes, pooling down her temples into her hair. "Marcus... the baby... she kicked me... she—"

"Shh, shh, look at me," Marcus said urgently, gently cupping her face with both hands, forcing her to focus on his eyes. "Listen to my voice, Khloe. Our daughter is alive. She's alive."

Khloe’s chest heaved as she let out a sob. "She is?"

"She was delivered early—an emergency C-section," Marcus explained, his own voice breaking as he stroked her forehead. "She's small, and she's in the NICU under heavy observation, but Julian says her lungs are strong. She’s fighting. You both fought."

Khloe closed her eyes, letting out a long, ragged exhale of pure relief. Tears ran freely down her face, washing away the lingering terror of the night. "Can I... can I see her?"

"As soon as Julian clears you to move," Marcus promised, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles. "I promise you, Khloe. You will hold her today."

The heavy door to the ICU suite opened softly. Dr. Julian Bennett walked in, holding a digital tablet under his arm. His usual stern surgical composure relaxed slightly when he saw his niece conscious and speaking.

"Look who decided to join us," Julian said gently, stepping up to the opposite side of the bed to check her vitals. "How's the pain, Khloe?"

"It hurts..." she whispered honestly. "But I'm okay. Uncle Julian... thank you."

"Don't thank me yet," Julian replied, adjusting her IV drip line. "You lost a dangerous amount of blood. You’re going to be on strict bed rest for weeks. But physically... you are going to recover."

Khloe looked from her uncle to Marcus. "What happened to Isabella?"

The air in the room instantly grew cold. The relief on Marcus’s face vanished, replaced by an expression of dark, absolute finality that sent a shiver through the quiet room.

"She is in a holding cell," Marcus said, his voice flat and uncompromising. "Her father is broke. Her family's company is in receivership. And she will never walk through the doors of high society—or step foot near you—ever again."

Khloe looked at her husband, seeing the sheer depth of the storm brewing behind his calm exterior. "Marcus... what did you do?"

"I did what I should have done weeks ago," Marcus replied softly, taking her hand once more. "I tore down everything she relied on to hurt you."
