Chapter 7: A Father's Vow

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was quiet, bathed in the soft blue glow of phototherapy lights and the rhythmic hum of life-support systems.
Khloe sat in a wheelchair beside a high-tech incubator, her face still pale, but her eyes bright with overwhelming love. Inside the glass box, a tiny infant, weighing barely three pounds, lay sleeping peacefully. Tiny monitors were attached to her chest, measuring every steady heartbeat.
Marcus stood behind Khloe, his large hands resting gently on her shoulders, guiding the wheelchair closer.
"She’s so small, Marcus..." Khloe whispered softly, her fingers reaching through the circular portal of the incubator to lightly touch her daughter’s microscopic hand.
The baby’s tiny fingers instinctively curled around Khloe’s index finger, gripping it with surprising strength.
A tear slipped down Khloe’s cheek, sparkling under the blue light. "She’s a fighter."
"She gets that from her mother," Marcus said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. He leaned down, placing a gentle kiss on top of Khloe’s head.
Dr. Julian Bennett walked into the quiet bay, holding a clipboard. He looked at the family, a warm, genuine smile replacing his usual professional mask.
"Her brain scans came back completely clear," Julian announced quietly, leaning against the counter. "No signs of internal trauma from the fall. Her lung capacity is improving by the hour. We’re going to step down her oxygen support by tomorrow."
Khloe let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, resting her head back against Marcus’s stomach. "Thank God..."
"She’s going to be fine, Khloe," Julian said softly. "In a few weeks, when she reaches weight, you’ll be taking her home."
Julian glanced at Marcus, giving him a silent nod toward the hallway. Marcus understood instantly. He smoothed Khloe’s hair back, kissing her cheek again.
"I’ll be right back, sweetheart. Let me speak with Julian about the discharge arrangements."
"Okay," Khloe murmured, her full attention already back on her daughter.
Outside in the hallway, away from the glass partition, the warmth vanished from Marcus’s eyes. He turned to Julian, his expression turning sharp and practical.
"Is the security team fully integrated into the wing?" Marcus asked.
"Six private guards on this floor, plus two state troopers stationed at the elevator bank," Julian confirmed. "No one enters this floor without biometric clearance and a personal check from me. The Rossi family couldn't get a courier in here if they tried."
"Good," Marcus said grimly. "Because Victor Rossi is desperate. His company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this afternoon. He has nothing left to lose."
"Let him try," Julian said coldly, his jaw tightening. "This hospital is my domain. I didn't just save my niece's life to let some disgraced real estate mogul threaten her again."
Marcus pulled a secure satellite phone from his pocket. "Elijah Vance has already tracked Victor’s remaining off-shore accounts. By tonight, he won't have enough capital left to hire a street lawyer, let alone a security team."

He looked back through the reinforced glass window at Khloe holding their tiny daughter’s hand.
"I promised her a life of peace, Julian," Marcus whispered, his eyes narrowing into slits of dark determination. "And I will erase anyone who tries to take it from her."
