Chapter 4: The House of Rossi Crumbles

At 2:00 AM, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Rossi Global Enterprises in downtown Manhattan was illuminated like a fortress under siege.

Victor Rossi, a man who had ruled the city's real estate sector for thirty years with an iron fist, slammed his heavy oak cane onto his glass desk. Across from him sat three senior partners from the city’s most formidable defense firm, their faces pale under the recessed lighting.

"What do you mean, you can't get her released on bail?!" Victor bellowed, his face flushed crimson. "She’s an heir to a fortune! This is a domestic dispute between two women at a charity event! Fabricate a narrative—claim self-defense, claim psychological distress!"

"Victor, listen to me," his chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, said, pushing a thick binder across the desk. "It’s not just a local precinct matter anymore. Marcus Thorne didn't just call the police; he mobilized federal prosecutors. And the victim’s uncle isn't just a surgeon—he’s on the state medical board. The video evidence is already sealed in a federal vault."

"Destroy the server!" Victor snarled.

"It’s already leaked," Pendelton replied softly, turning on a wall-mounted display.

The screen lit up with late-night news broadcasts. The footage—hd, crystal clear, with timestamped audio—was looping on every major network. The image of Isabella Rossi, cold-eyed and resplendent in red silk, thrusting her pointed heel into a defenseless, pregnant Khloe Thorne, was burning across global social media.

Below the video, red ticker banners read:

  • ROSSI ENTERPRISES SHARES PLUMMET 18% IN AFTER-HOURS TRADING

  • THORNE FINANCIAL INITIATES HOSTILE FORECLOSURE ON ROSSI ASSETS

  • DISTRICT ATTORNEY CONFIRMS AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND ATTEMPTED MUPDER CHARGES

Victor sank slowly into his leather armchair, the reality of the disaster crashing over him. "He’s trying to wipe us out..."

"He isn't trying, Victor," Pendelton said quietly. "He’s already doing it. By dawn, your primary lenders will issue margin calls. Marcus Thorne has systematically bought out your debt holdings over the last six months. He owned you before Isabella even set foot in that hospital suite."

Meanwhile, inside the precinct holding cell three miles away, Isabella Rossi sat on a cold metal bench. The crimson gown that had felt like armor hours earlier was now rumpled, smelling of stale holding-cell air and damp concrete. Her designer heels had been confiscated; her bare feet rested on the chilly floor.

A guard rattled the iron bars. "Rossi. Your lawyer is here."

Isabella stood up instantly, tossing her disheveled hair over her shoulder, attempting to summon her usual air of superiority. "It took you long enough, Arthur. Tell me the car is outside. I want this disgusting place sanitized and closed."

Arthur Pendelton entered the small interview room, stepping past the guard. He didn't sit down. He looked at her with a mix of pity and profound exhaustion.

"Where is my father?" Isabella demanded, leaning over the table. "Why isn't he here?"

"Your father is currently trying to prevent the complete liquidation of his life's work," Pendelton said coldly. "Isabella... there is no bail. The judge reviewed the hospital footage twenty minutes ago. Given the severity of Mrs. Thorne’s injuries and the premeditated nature of the assault, you are being held without bond at Riker's Island pending trial."

Isabella froze, her breath catching in her throat. A high-pitched, hysterical laugh escaped her lips. "Riker's? Are you out of your mind? Do you know who I am?! I am an elite! Marcus will drop the charges once he calms down. He loves me—he’s just doing this to keep up appearances for his board!"

Pendelton closed his briefcase with a sharp, echoing snap. "Marcus Thorne hasn't slept in eight hours, Isabella. He isn't trying to keep up appearances. He has authorized an unlimited legal budget with one explicit instruction: to ensure you receive the maximum statutory sentence without the possibility of parole."

Isabella’s composure fractured. The arrogant smile melted away, replaced by raw, frantic terror. "No... no, Arthur! Fix this! Call my father! Tell him to fix this!"

"Your father can't save you from yourself anymore," Pendelton whispered, turning toward the door. "Pray that Khloe Thorne wakes up. Because if that child or that mother dies... you won't be looking at ten years. You'll be looking at life."
