Chapter 5 - The Locked Doors

Back in the penthouse, Julian was losing his temper. He had tried the landline—dead. He had walked to the private elevator that led directly to the lobby, but the digital keypad glowed a hostile, unyielding red.
"Julian, baby, what's wrong with the air conditioning?" Chloe complained from the sofa. "It's freezing in here."
Julian noticed it too. The climate control had been shut off. The ambient temperature in the glass-walled penthouse was dropping rapidly into the low fifties.
"I'm going to fire the entire engineering department," Julian roared, kicking the heavy oak door of the suite. "Someone is playing a very dangerous game!"

He marched into the master bedroom to change out of his suit, only to find the walk-in closet doors electronically locked. The safes were sealed. The expensive watches, the designer suits, the millions in cash he kept hidden—all of it was suddenly out of his reach.
For the first time since he had ordered me out of the building, a cold, creeping sense of dread began to crawl up Julian’s spine. He wasn't in control. He was a rat trapped in a very expensive maze.
