Chapter 10 - The War BeginsThree days later, I walked out of the hospital holding Toby securely in a chest carrier, flanked by two plainclothes officers.

I didn't return to the house on Oakridge Lane. Sarah had arranged for us to stay in a secure, undisclosed transitional home equipped with private security and cameras.
That afternoon, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.
I answered it, putting it on speaker so Sarah could listen.
"Clara," Evelyn’s voice came through the line—smooth, gentle, and utterly toxic. "I know you think you’ve won because Mark is in a cell. But you are a broken girl with no money and no family left to back you."
"I have the truth, Evelyn," I said, keeping my voice dead even. "And I have the medical records from Ohio twenty-two years ago."
Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds. The sweet, motherly facade evaporated completely.
"You think you're clever, don't you?" Evelyn whispered, her tone dropping into a icy, venomous snarl. "You took my son from me. You tried to take my grandson. I built Mark from nothing, Clara. I will burn down your entire life before I let you walk away with that boy."
"Try it," I said, looking down at my sleeping son. The timid, terrified mother who had cowered on the bathroom floor was dead. "See you in court, Evelyn."
I hung up the phone.
The battle for my life and my son was far from over. But for the first time since Toby was born, I wasn't running.
