Chapter 15 - The Trap SpringsThe air inside the dark, unheated garage smelled of gasoline and dry dust.

A single bulb hummed overhead. Evelyn stood near the workbench, holding a heavy iron tire iron in her gloved hand, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice.

When the side door creaked open and Clara stepped inside holding the bundle, Evelyn smiled—a grotesque, triumphant snarl.

"You thought you were so clever, didn't you, Clara?" Evelyn said, stepping forward, raising the iron bar. "You turned my own son against me. You ruined my family. Give me the boy."

Clara didn't back away. She stood her ground near the concrete doorway, holding the blanket tight.

"Mark didn't turn against you because of me, Evelyn," Clara said, her voice echoing clearly through the small space. "He turned against you because he finally saw what you are. A monster who killed his father twenty-two years ago in Ohio, and a monster who tried to destroy his wife."

Evelyn’s eyes burned with insane rage. "His father was weak! Just like Mark is weak! And you... you are nothing!"

Evelyn lunged forward, swinging the iron bar directly toward Clara's head.

Clara dodged sharply to the left, dropping the blanketed bundle onto a soft pile of padded moving blankets behind the doorway.

BOOM!

The double garage doors were suddenly blown open with explosive force. High-intensity tactical floodlights flooded the dark space, blinding Evelyn instantly.

"POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!"

Four tactical officers surged into the garage, their laser sights painting Evelyn’s chest in brilliant crimson dots. Detective Vance stepped through the light, her sidearm drawn and steady.

Evelyn stumbled back, dropping the iron bar onto the concrete floor with a loud metallic clatter. She looked at Clara, then at the tactical team, realizing in one terrifying moment that the bundle on the floor contained no child—Toby was safe inside a police precinct three miles away.

"Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for attempted kidnapping, felony assault, witness intimidation, and violation of a protective order," Detective Vance commanded, as two officers forced Evelyn down onto the cold concrete, snapping steel cuffs around her wrists.

Clara stood tall, adjusting her coat, looking down at the woman who had terrorized her for months.

Evelyn glared up from the floor, her hair disheveled, her voice choked with desperate rage. "You ruined everything!"

Clara knelt down, looking Evelyn directly in the eyes, her voice cold and unyielding:

"No, Evelyn. I just unlocked the door."
