Chapter 16 - The Grand Jury Indictment
Two weeks after the night in the garage, the state prosecutor convened a grand jury to present the consolidated evidence against both Mark and Evelyn Vance.
Clara sat on a wooden bench outside the grand jury room, holding four-month-old Toby on her lap. Her legal advocate, Sarah Stern, sat beside her with a thick binder of documentation. The terror that had once paralyzed Clara had burned away, replaced by an immovable resolve.
Inside the courtroom, Detective Vance presented the overwhelming paper trail: the recorded 911 call with Mark’s explicit confession, the forensics from the bathroom door, the physical evidence of the flathead screwdriver recovered from the hallway, and the security footage from the garage sting.
Furthermore, the prosecution introduced Mark’s sworn state proffer, in which he detailed how his mother had systematically manipulated him, planned the removal of Clara's SIM card, and instructed him to use force.
When the grand jury returned after less than an hour of deliberation, they handed down a sweeping multi-count indictment:
Evelyn Vance: Attempted Kidnapping, First-Degree Felony Assault, Witness Intimidation, Conspiracy to Commit Domestic Violence, and Violation of a Protective Order.
