Chapter 11 - The Pre-Trial AmbushThe Maricopa County Family Court building stood like a concrete monolith under the blazing afternoon sun.
Clara sat beside Sarah Stern at the prosecution table, wearing a crisp navy suit. Her hair was pulled back tightly, revealing the fading yellowish bruise near her hairline—a deliberate choice to remind the court of the violence that had taken place inside her home. Across the aisle sat Evelyn, flanked by two top-tier defense attorneys hired with the remainder of Mark’s liquidated savings account.
Evelyn was dressed in a soft pastel sweater, holding a pristine handkerchief, projecting the image of a grieving, heartbroken grandmother whose family had been shattered by a unstable daughter-in-law.
"Your Honor," Evelyn’s lead attorney began, stepping up to the wooden podium. "My client is a decorated retired nurse with forty years of public service. We have submitted sworn affidavits from neighbor witnesses testifying that Mrs. Clara Vance displayed severe mood swings, emotional volatility, and erratic behavior in the weeks following her delivery."
Sarah Stern stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, those 'neighbor witnesses' are personal friends of Evelyn Vance who have never stepped foot inside the residence during the post-partum period. Furthermore, we submit into evidence the unedited 911 audio recording from the afternoon of the assault."
Sarah pressed play on a digital recorder attached to the courtroom audio system.
Mark’s frantic, angry voice echoed through the high-arched room: "I took the damn thing out because you keep calling people and making me look insane!" Followed immediately by Evelyn’s sharp hiss: "What? You were standing right there!"
The family court judge leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she glared over her reading glasses directly at Evelyn.
Evelyn’s composure flickered for a fraction of a second, her hands gripping her handkerchief so tightly her knuckles turned white.

"The court finds the audio evidence deeply disturbing," the judge ruled coldly. "Pending the criminal trial of Mark Vance, temporary full physical and legal custody of Toby Vance remains exclusively with the mother, Clara Vance. Evelyn Vance is issued a temporary restraining order requiring her to maintain a distance of no less than five hundred feet from both mother and child."
Clara exhaled a breath she felt like she had been holding for three weeks. But as Evelyn turned to leave the courtroom, her eyes locked onto Clara’s with an icy, promise of vengeance.
