Chapter 20 - Unbroken

On a warm summer evening, Clara sat on the front porch swing, watching Toby play safely with a golden retriever puppy in the fenced front yard. The sky was painted in soft shades of orange and gold.
She pulled out her smartphone—the same phone that had once been stripped of its SIM card in a dark bathroom. She looked at the screen, which now displayed full signal bars and photos of a happy, thriving life.
Sarah Stern and Detective Vance walked up the porch steps, carrying a basket of fresh peaches and fruit to celebrate Toby's upcoming second birthday.
"He's growing so fast, Clara," Detective Vance said with a warm smile, sitting down on the porch chair.
"He is," Clara replied softly, watching her son laugh as he chased a butterfly across the grass. "And he knows he is safe."
Sarah placed a hand on Clara's shoulder. "You built this safety, Clara. You saved both of your lives."
Clara looked out over the sunlit yard, taking a deep, clear breath of fresh air. The bruises had long since healed, the courtrooms were behind her, and the perpetrators were locked away where they could never cause harm again.
