Chapter 17 - Mark’s Plea and Sentencing
Six months later, Mark Vance stood before the criminal court judge to receive his sentence.
He looked entirely different from the arrogant man who had dragged Clara by her hair. He had lost weight, his shoulders were slouched, and his eyes remained fixed on the floor. He had waived his right to a jury trial, pleading guilty to all charges under a negotiated plea agreement in exchange for testifying against his mother.
Clara stood at the podium to deliver her Victim Impact Statement. She held her head high, her voice resonating through the packed courtroom.
"For months, Mark made me believe I was weak, hysterical, and incapable of protecting my child," Clara said, looking directly at the defense table. "He used isolation and fear to turn our home into a prison. But the day he locked me in that bathroom was the day I realized I possessed a strength he could never break. I do not hate him; I pity him for allowing himself to be a weapon in his mother's hands. But forgiveness does not erase accountability."
The judge nodded slowly before delivering the sentence.

"Mark Vance, your actions were a cruel breach of trust against a vulnerable mother and newborn," the judge stated sternly. "In light of your full cooperation and testimony, this court sentences you to eight years in state prison, followed by five years of mandatory probation, and a permanent, lifetime order of protection prohibiting any contact with Clara Vance or Toby Vance."
Mark closed his eyes as the handcuffs clicked into place, tears slipping down his face as officers led him away to begin his sentence.
