Chapter 18 - The Trial of Evelyn Vance
Evelyn Vance’s trial lasted four grueling days. Unlike her son, she refused to accept responsibility, taking the stand in her own defense to maintain her image as a devoted grandmother framed by a vengeful daughter-in-law.
However, the prosecution tore her defense apart piece by piece.
The prosecutor played the 911 audio for the jury—Evelyn’s cold hiss recorded clearly in the background as Mark admitted to taking the SIM card. Then, Detective Vance introduced the archived cold-case records from Ohio regarding the death of Evelyn’s first husband, establishing a forty-year pattern of narcissistic control and lethal manipulation.
The jury took under two hours to return a verdict: Guilty on all counts.
At the sentencing hearing, the judge did not hold back.
"Evelyn Vance, you operated with a chilling calculating cruelty," the judge stated, gazing down at the defendant. "You took advantage of a postpartum mother, weaponized your own son, and put an innocent infant in grave danger to satisfy your desire for control. You are a predator to your own family."

As she was escorted out, Evelyn turned her head, glaring at Clara with bitter rage. But Clara simply held Toby closer, looking back with complete detachment. The shadow that had loomed over her life for years had finally vanished.
