Chapter 9 - Ghosts of the PastDetective Vance slid a black-and-white mugshot across the table.

The woman in the photo was younger, but the cold, calculating eyes were unmistakable. It was Evelyn.

"Twenty-two years ago, in Ohio, Evelyn’s first husband—Mark’s father—died under mysterious circumstances," Detective Vance explained, her voice dropping. "He was found unresponsive in their home after being given an overdose of prescription sedatives. Evelyn was the sole caretaker."

I stared at the photograph, horror creeping up my spine. "She killed him?"

"She was indicted for manslaughter," Detective Vance replied. "But due to a procedural error with the evidence and her status as a respected nurse, the charges were dropped, and the records were quietly restricted. Mark was six years old at the time. She took his father's life insurance payout, moved to Pennsylvania, and spent the next two decades molding Mark into someone she could completely control."

The puzzle pieces fell into place with sickening clarity. Evelyn hadn't just moved into my home to help with a newborn; she had recognized Mark’s marriage to me as a threat to her dominance. She had intentionally systematically broken me down, using Mark as her physical instrument, to ensure history repeated itself—so she could gain control of another generation.

"This changes everything," Sarah Stern said, her eyes burning with newfound fury. "If we introduce this record to the family court judge, Evelyn won't just lose her petition for emergency custody. She’ll be exposed as a danger to the child."

"She knows we're looking into her," Detective Vance warned. "Which means she’s going to get desperate."
