Chapter 12 - Retaliation in the ShadowsEvelyn didn't obey the restraining order by backing down; she shifted her tactics from the courtroom to the streets.

Two days after the hearing, Clara stepped out of her secure transitional apartment to meet Sarah for coffee. As she walked toward her car, she noticed a silver sedan parked half a block away with dark tinted windows. When she drove to the grocery store, the sedan followed two cars behind.
Then came the psychological warfare.
At 2:00 AM, Clara’s phone buzzed with an anonymous notification. It was an email containing an attachment: photos of Clara walking into the pediatric clinic with Toby earlier that morning, taken from a long-distance telephoto lens. Attached was a single line of text: An unfit mother cannot protect her child everywhere.
Clara immediately forwarded the files to Detective Vance. "She’s following us," Clara said into the receiver, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "She wants me to panic so I make a mistake."
"We can't prove Evelyn is personally driving that car yet," Detective Vance replied, frustration evident in her tone. "She likely hired a private investigator to skirt the restraining order boundaries. But we're building the harassment file."
"No," Clara said, looking at the sleeping infant in the crib beside her bed. "We're done waiting for her to cross the line. It's time to force her hand."
Meanwhile, inside the county jail, Mark was breaking down.
Without his mother constantly whispering in his ear, isolated in an eight-by-ten cell with three felony indictments hanging over his head, the reality of his situation had finally crushed him. His high-priced lawyers were demanding more money, and his mother was ignoring his calls from the inmate phone bank—focusing all her financial resources on her own legal defense and tracking Clara.
When Detective Vance dropped by the jail for an unannounced interview, Mark looked hollow, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling in his orange jumpsuit.
"She abandoned you, Mark," Detective Vance said quietly, setting a file on the steel table. "Evelyn emptied your joint savings account yesterday morning to pay her private security firm. You're facing fifteen years in state prison, and she's out there spending your money."

Mark buried his face in his hands, a raspy sob escaping his throat. "She told me... she told me Clara was going to take him away forever... She said we had to make Clara look crazy..."
"If you want to save yourself from a decade behind bars," Detective Vance leaned in, "you need to tell us everything."
