Chapter 11 - Shadows of the PastTwo months later, winter had settled over Boston in a blanket of thick, pristine snow.

The Beacon Hill mansion was decorated for the holidays—a massive balsam fir stood in the grand foyer, draped in gold lights and velvet ribbons, and the scent of pine and cinnamon filled the warm hallways. For the first time in her life, Harper was experiencing what it felt like to prepare for Christmas without fear, without counting pennies, and without looking over her shoulder.

She had spent the morning working with an interior designer to restore the third floor into a private art studio and library. Gabriel had insisted on giving her complete freedom to redesign the estate to her liking.

At 3:00 PM, Marcus knocked softly on the open door of the study, his expression unusually grim.

"Boss," Marcus said, stepping inside. "We have a situation at the South Boston distribution center."

Gabriel looked up from his desk, his eyes narrowing instantly. "What kind of situation?"

"A courier delivered a sealed wooden crate addressed personally to Miss Harper," Marcus replied, holding up a sleek tablet showing high-resolution security scans. "X-ray picked up an antique wrought-iron box inside. No explosives, no chemical traces. But look at the crest stamped on the wax seal."

Gabriel leaned forward, his face hardening like slate.

Stamped into the dark red wax was an emblem he recognized all too well: a crest depicting two crossed daggers over an oak leaf—the personal sigil of the Lawson family estate in Savannah.

Harper stepped into the study just in time to hear Marcus's words. Her eyes widened as she looked at the screen.

"Derek's family," she breathed out, the warmth draining from her hands. "I thought his father passed away five years ago."

"His father did," Gabriel said, standing up from his desk and pulling his coat on with practiced efficiency. "But his uncle, Richard Lawson, still controls the family trust in Georgia. Richard was the one who funded Derek’s political rise."

Gabriel walked over to Harper, taking her hands in his, grounding her with his firm, warm grip. "Stay here with Noah. Marcus and I will handle this."

"No," Harper said firmly, tightening her grip on his fingers. "Derek’s uncle sent that package to me, Gabriel. If this is a ghost from my past, I'm going to face it with you."

Gabriel searched her eyes for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, he nodded slowly. "Alright. But you stay behind me at all times."

Twenty minutes later, Gabriel’s armored SUV pulled into the secure loading bay of the Ashford Maritime Facility at the Port of Boston. Four heavily armed guards stood watch around a solitary wooden crate sitting on a steel worktable.

Marcus approached with a crowbar, carefully prying open the wooden crate. Inside sat a polished rosewood box lined with black velvet.

Inside the box lay a single, heavy silver pocket watch—its glass face shattered—and a handwritten letter on thick, yellowed parchment.

Gabriel used gloved hands to pull the letter out, unfolding it under the bright halogen lights of the warehouse.

To the woman who destroyed my nephew,

Derek was a fool who allowed his passions to blind him, but he was still a Lawson. The Ashford family thinks they have secured Boston, but a blood debt is not settled by federal prosecutors or prison bars.

Consider the watch a timer, Harper. You have until the New Year to return what Derek stole from our family trust, or the war Gabriel Ashford started will come to your doorstep.

— Richard Lawson

Gabriel slowly folded the letter, his face devoid of all emotion—a cold, terrifying calm settling over him that made even his own guards step back respectfully.

"He wants a war," Gabriel said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "Marcus."

"Yes, Boss?"

"Call our contacts in Atlanta," Gabriel commanded, his eyes burning with a lethal blue light. "I want Richard Lawson’s financial assets audited by midnight. I want his shipping charters revoked by morning. And buy up every mortgage his holding company owns in Georgia."

Harper looked at Gabriel, realizing in that moment the absolute power of the man who loved her. Richard Lawson thought he was threatening a defenseless victim; he had no idea he had just poked a sleeping dragon.
