Chapter 12 - The RetaliationGabriel did not wait for the New Year.

Over the next seventy-two hours, the Ashford network executed a masterclass in corporate and strategic destruction. Richard Lawson’s empire in Savannah didn't collapse under gunfire; it disintegrated under the weight of Gabriel’s legal, financial, and tactical pressure.

By Tuesday morning, state prosecutors in Georgia had received an anonymous, un-redacted ledger detailing twenty years of tax evasion and money laundering linked directly to Richard Lawson’s textile firm. Federal marshals seized his estate in Savannah by noon.

Sitting in the warm sunroom of the Beacon Hill mansion, Harper watched the news broadcast on a tablet while sipping tea.

"In a shocking turn of events, prominent Georgia businessman Richard Lawson was taken into federal custody this morning on charges of racketeering and wire fraud..."

The door to the sunroom opened, and Gabriel walked in, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, looking as composed as if he had just returned from a brief stroll in the garden. He set his leather gloves on the table and sat down across from her.

"It's over," Gabriel said simply. "Richard Lawson will be spending the rest of his life in a federal facility alongside his nephew. The Lawson name is officially erased."

Harper set her tea down, looking at him with deep affection mixed with awe. "You dismantled a century-old southern dynasty in three days."

"They threatened you, Harper," Gabriel said, leaning across the table and taking her hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips. "They're lucky I used lawyers instead of my men."

Harper chuckled softly, shaking her head. "You are completely terrifying, Gabriel Ashford."

"Only to people who try to hurt what's mine," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips.

Before the moment could deepen, Noah burst into the sunroom, wearing heavy snow boots, a bright red winter coat, and a wool hat pulled low over his ears.

"Gabriel! Marcus says it’s thick enough to build a snow fort in the courtyard!" Noah declared excitedly. "Come on! You promised!"

Gabriel looked at the boy, then down at his custom-tailored thousand-dollar suit, and let out a soft sigh. "Give me five minutes to change, kid."

"Yes!" Noah yelled, turning around and racing back toward the foyer.

Harper laughed, leaning back in her chair. "A powerful crime lord, brought to his knees by an eight-year-old and a snowball."

"Don't mock me, future Mrs. Ashford," Gabriel warned playfully, standing up and pulling her up by her waist, bringing her body flush against his. "Or I'll throw you in a snowbank first."

"You wouldn't dare," she teased.

Gabriel’s answer was a slow, deep kiss that left her breathless, his hands resting possessively on her hips. "Try me," he whispered against her skin.
