Chapter 17 - The Midnight StormThat night, a severe spring thunderstorm rolled over Boston. Sheets of heavy rain lashed against the high glass windows of the Beacon Hill mansion, and thunder rumbled across the dark harbor.

At 2:15 AM, Harper woke up with a sharp, gasping breath. A intense, tightening contraction gripped her lower abdomen, making her fingers clutch the silk bedsheets tightly.
Beside her, Gabriel’s eyes snapped open instantly. Years of high-alert living meant he was fully awake in less than a second.
"Harper?" he asked, sitting up immediately and placing a hand on her back. "Is it time?"
"Gabriel..." she panted, holding her breath until the contraction eased. "Call the doctor. She's coming now."
What followed was a masterclass in controlled efficiency. While the storm raged outside, Gabriel’s private medical team—who had been stationed in the estate’s west wing for the past fortnight—assembled in the state-of-the-art delivery suite on the second floor.
Marcus stood guard at the end of the hallway, ensuring the private medical staff had everything they needed, while Noah sat wrapped in a blanket in the study downstairs, wide awake with excitement despite the late hour.
Inside the delivery suite, Gabriel never left Harper's side. The man who had faced down rival syndicates, federal indictments, and armed hit squads looked pale with intense concentration as he held Harper's hand, letting her squeeze his fingers with incredible force through every contraction.
"You're doing amazing, sweetheart," Gabriel murmured into her ear, wiping sweat from her forehead with a cool cloth. "Just breathe with me."
"If you tell me to breathe one more time, Gabriel Ashford, I will shoot you," Harper gasped through gritted teeth, making the attending obstetrician chuckle softly.
"Fair enough," Gabriel smiled, kissing her knuckles. "I'm right here."
At 4:42 AM, as a flash of lightning illuminated the night sky outside, a loud, clear, healthy cry echoed through the room.
The doctor wrapped the newborn in a soft flannel blanket and gently laid her onto Harper's chest. "It's a girl, Mrs. Ashford. Healthy and strong."
Harper collapsed back against the pillows, tears streaming down her face as she looked down at the tiny, delicate miracle resting on her heart. The baby had a tuft of soft dark hair and open, bright blue eyes—the exact shade of her father's.
Gabriel stared down at his daughter, his chest heaving, a single tear slipping down his cheek unchecked. He reached out with a trembling finger, and the newborn instinctively curled her tiny hand around his thumb.

"She's beautiful, Gabriel," Harper whispered, her voice filled with profound awe.
"She looks just like you," Gabriel choked out, kissing Harper's temple before leaning down to kiss his daughter's tiny forehead. "Welcome to the world, Grace."
