Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

Three days later, the harbor was calm once more.

Viktor Vance’s syndicate had suffered a catastrophic blow. Deprived of his maritime routes and hit with a coordinated federal asset freeze engineered by Gabriel’s legal team, Vance fled the country before the weekend was over, leaving the Boston underworld entirely under Gabriel’s undisputed control.

The Beacon Hill mansion had been repaired, the shattered windows replaced, the bullet holes patched over with the quiet efficiency of men who treated violence like household maintenance.

Inside the private kitchen on a crisp Sunday morning, the smell of fresh coffee and pancakes filled the air.

Noah sat at the kitchen island, laughing as Gabriel—of all people—flipped a pancake high into the air, catching it neatly back on the skillet. The eight-year-old boy looked up at the feared crime boss with wide, absolute hero worship.

"You're pretty good at this for a mob guy," Noah observed innocently.

Gabriel chuckled, sliding the pancake onto a plate. "Practice, kid. Now eat your breakfast before it gets cold."

Harper walked into the kitchen, leaning against the doorframe with a mug of coffee in her hand, watching the scene unfold with a warmth in her chest that she hadn't felt since her mother passed away.

Gabriel looked over his shoulder, catching her eye. He handed the spatula to Marcus, who was standing guard near the pantry, and walked over to her.

"Your brother has approved of my cooking skills," Gabriel noted softly, stopping inches away from her.

"My brother is easily bribed with maple syrup," Harper replied, smiling.

Gabriel reached out, taking the coffee mug from her hand and setting it on the counter, replacing it by taking both of her hands in his. His pale blue eyes were serious, stripped of all shadows.

"The federal prosecutors officially closed the file on Derek Lawson this morning," Gabriel said quietly. "He’s doing twenty-five years in maximum security. His name is scrubbed from the department records. He doesn't exist anymore."

Harper closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of profound relief. The last invisible chain binding her to her past finally snapped, dissolving into the ether.

"Thank you, Gabriel," she whispered, opening her eyes to look directly into his. "For everything."

"You don't ever have to thank me for keeping you safe, Harper," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that deep, intimate register that made her world tilt on its axis. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.

Harper’s breath caught. She stared at the box.

Gabriel didn't kneel—that wasn't his style. Instead, he opened the velvet lid to reveal a stunning, antique diamond ring that looked like it belonged in a museum, surrounded by a delicate platinum band.

"I’ve spent my entire life building walls, controlling outcomes, and making sure nobody could ever touch me," Gabriel said, his voice raw with a rare, absolute sincerity. "And then a battered, exhausted maid walked into my private bathroom, bleeding on my marble floor, and completely destroyed every single rule I ever made."

A tear slipped down Harper’s cheek, but she was smiling—a wide, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

"I've never done this before, Gabriel," she whispered, echoing the fragile truth of her heart.

"Neither have I," Gabriel replied, sliding the ring onto her finger, sealing the promise in the quiet, sunlit kitchen while Noah happily argued with Marcus about baseball in the background. "And I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure you never regret it."
