Chapter 14 - Whispers in ParisThree weeks later.

The private penthouse suite at Le Meurice in Paris looked out over the sunlit Gardens of the Tuileries and the distant, majestic silhouette of the Eiffel Tower.

Harper lay propped up on plush white linen sheets, wearing a soft silk robe, a silver tray with warm croissants, fresh berries, and steaming cafe au lait sitting on the bed beside her.

The balcony doors were slightly open, letting in a crisp, cool European spring breeze.

Gabriel walked into the bedroom, wearing gray trousers and an unbuttoned white linen shirt, his damp hair slicked back from a morning shower. He looked completely relaxed, devoid of the sharp edge that had defined him for twenty years.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, leaning over to kiss Harper gently on the forehead, then on the lips.

"Good morning, Mrs. Ashford," he murmured, his thumb trailing down her jawline.

"Good morning, my husband," she replied, leaning into his touch. "How was your morning call with Marcus?"

"Boring," Gabriel chuckled, sliding under the covers beside her and pulling her into his arms. "He says Noah is currently attempting to teach his new German Shepherd puppy how to play chess in the library."

Harper laughed, laying her head against Gabriel’s bare chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "I still can't believe you actually bought him that dog."

"I told you, I'm a changed man," Gabriel murmured, his hands gently tracing the curve of her waist. "Besides, the kid deserves it. He’s happy, Harper. Safe."

"We all are," she whispered softly.

Gabriel shifted, turning her onto her back, hovering over her with a sudden, intense warmth in his eyes. He looked down at her face, tracing every feature as if memorizing a masterpiece.

"What is it?" she asked softly.

"I was just thinking about the night we met," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a low, husky register. "You were bleeding, terrified, holding a broken piece of glass in my bathroom."

Harper smiled faintly, reaching up to run her fingers through his dark hair. "And you were the scariest man I had ever seen."

"And now?"

"Now," Harper whispered, pulling his head down toward hers, "you're my whole world."

Gabriel kissed her then—a slow, deep, possessive kiss that kindled a familiar heat between them. The tray of breakfast was forgotten as Gabriel pulled her closer, his hands sliding beneath her silk robe, worshipping every inch of her skin with a tender, unhurried passion.

Outside, the bells of Notre-Dame chimed across the Parisian skyline, marking the quiet, beautiful passage of time in a world where fear no longer existed.
