Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Threshold

Upstairs in the private quarters, Harper sat on the edge of a plush velvet armchair in Gabriel’s personal study, staring out the massive window at the twinkling lights of the harbor.

The door opened softly.

Gabriel walked in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee and a small glass of water with two ibuprofen tablets. He crossed the room and handed them to her without a word.

Harper took the mug, her fingers brushing against his. "Is he gone?"

"He's gone," Gabriel said, leaning back against the edge of the mahogany desk. "Federal Marshals picked him up ten minutes ago. By morning, he’ll be in a maximum-security facility in upstate New York. His badge, his gun, and his pension have been permanently revoked."

Harper let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for three long, agonizing years. The invisible weight pressing down on her shoulders—the constant terror of footsteps in the hallway, the sound of keys turning in the lock, the looming shadow of violence—simply vanished.

She looked up at Gabriel, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You didn't have to do that. You risked everything—your operation, your safety—for a girl you've known for four days."

"You saved my floor from a bloodstain," Gabriel deadpanned, a faint trace of amusement touching his lips.

A watery smile broke through Harper’s face, and for the first time since she had arrived in Beacon Hill, she genuinely laughed. It was a light, musical sound that seemed to chase the lingering ghosts out of the dark corners of the study.

Gabriel watched her, his expression softening in a way his enemies would never have believed possible. The cold, untouchable crime boss of South Boston felt something he hadn't allowed himself to feel in over a decade: the undeniable pull of a home he never knew he was missing.

"You don't have to be a maid anymore, Harper," Gabriel said quietly, stepping closer. "The debt is paid. Your apartment in Dorchester is secured for the next ten years. You can go back to nursing school. You can finish your degree."

Harper set the mug down on the table. She stood up, facing him directly, closing the small distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating off his chest.

"And if I don't want to leave?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her freshly taped ribs, not from fear, but from something entirely new.

Gabriel’s breath hitched. He reached out, his large, warm hand cupping the side of her face, his thumb gently tracing the smooth skin where Derek’s bruises used to be.

"Then stay," Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with unvoiced promise. "Stay as long as you want."
