Chapter 13 - The Dark HistoryThat evening, as rain battered the windows of the Ballard safehouse, Evelyn sat wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping tea while Julian and Clara worked through the legal briefs.

"Evelyn," Clara asked gently, sitting beside her on the sofa. "When Arthur had you committed in Spokane... how did you manage to get out?"
Evelyn set her cup down, her eyes staring into the distance as memories of the dark years resurfaced.
"For two years, they kept me on heavy sedatives," Evelyn whispered softly. "They told me Julian was dead. They told me I had caused the accident that killed him. I almost believed them... until a young night nurse named Sarah noticed that my dosage orders were being sent directly from a private corporate account in Seattle rather than the attending physician."
Julian stopped typing and listened intently.
"Sarah realized something was wrong," Evelyn continued. "She secretly swapped my sedatives for vitamins for three weeks until my head cleared. On a rainy night in November 1996, Sarah left a service door unlocked near the laundry loading dock. I ran into the woods with five dollars in my pocket and the clothes on my back."
"Why didn't you go to the police back then?" Julian asked, his voice thick with emotion.
"I tried," Evelyn said, tears shimmering in her eyes. "I went to the precinct in Seattle. But Arthur’s head of security, a former police captain named Richard Vance—Arthur’s cousin—was waiting for me in the lobby. He took me into an interrogation room and showed me photos of you, Julian. You were six years old, playing in the garden of the Montgomery estate."
Evelyn reached out and squeezed Julian’s hand.
"He told me that if I ever made a sound, if I ever approached a judge or a newspaper, he would ensure Arthur stripped you of your inheritance, cast you out onto the streets, and ruin your life. He made me choose: my silence, or your safety and future."

Julian closed his eyes, a profound wave of guilt and sorrow washing over him. "You sacrificed thirty years of your life... just to keep me safe in luxury."
"A mother's job isn't to be rich, Julian," Evelyn said softly. "It's to make sure her child survives."
