Chapter 15 - The Trial BeginsTwo months later, the King County Superior Courthouse was packed to capacity for the opening statements in The State of Washington v. Arthur Vance.

The courtroom was a sea of high-society observers, corporate lawyers, journalists, and spectators.

Arthur Vance sat at the defense table, wearing an expensive dark blue suit. Though his legal team of six elite attorneys surrounded him, he looked visibly older, his silver hair unkempt, his eyes filled with a bitter, trapped fury.

Across the room sat the prosecution team, with Julian sitting as a key witness alongside Evelyn Mercer, who wore a clean, simple navy dress provided by Clara.

Judge Harold Thomas slammed his gavel, restoring silence to the crowded room.

"Prosecution, you may deliver your opening statement," Judge Thomas ordered.

Assistant State Attorney Rebecca Torres stood up and walked calmly toward the jury box.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Torres began, her voice echoing clearly off the high mahogany walls. "This case is not merely about corporate fraud or political corruption. It is about a man who believed that unlimited wealth gave him the right to erase a human life."

Torres pointed directly at Arthur Vance.

"Thirty years ago, the defendant decided that a loving mother was an inconvenience to his social ambitions. He orchestrated her violent removal, spent millions of dollars to keep her silenced in a remote facility, and lied to his own son, telling him his mother was dead. For three decades, Evelyn Mercer lived in the shadows while Arthur Vance built an empire on her stolen freedom."

Torres turned to face Julian and Evelyn.

"But truth has a way of rising through the cracks of the most expensive concrete. Today, you will hear the evidence of that truth."

At the defense table, Arthur glared at Julian with cold, venomous hatred.

Julian met his father’s gaze without flinching. He was no longer the boy who grew up in Arthur’s shadow. He was a man standing beside the mother who had given up everything for him—ready to tear down the empire of lies once and for all.
