Chapter 5 - The Fractured ReceptionThe woman was dragged down the steps and pushed past the iron gates of the church courtyard, where she vanished into the gray afternoon fog of downtown Seattle.

Despite the shocking interruption, Arthur forced the wedding procession to continue. Within thirty minutes, guests were ushered into the grand ballroom of the Bellevue Regency Hotel for the five-hundred-guest reception.

Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over champagne towers, ice sculptures, and silver platters. A live jazz quartet played quietly in the corner.

To the outside world, nothing had changed. The guests murmured politely about a "disturbed homeless person" who had tried to ruin the ceremony. Clara’s parents laughed it off as a bizarre urban incident, ensuring everyone that security at the hotel had been doubled.

But at the head table, the tension was suffocating.

Clara sat beside Julian in her immaculate lace gown, but her smile was rigid, fixed like glass. She kept looking down at Julian’s hands, which were clenched tightly in his lap beneath the white tablecloth.

“Julian, please,” Clara whispered, leaning toward him so the nearby photographer wouldn't hear. “Your father said she’s an imposter. You’re making a scene by sitting here like a statue. People are staring.”

Julian slowly turned his head to look at his bride.

“She knew about the wooden soldiers, Clara,” Julian said softly. “I’ve never told a single human being about those toys. Not even you.”

“Julian, it’s our wedding night!” Clara’s voice cracked with rising panic. “We are supposed to fly to Paris tomorrow! My father just transferred three million dollars into our joint business venture! You cannot let some crazy woman’s tricks destroy everything we’ve built!”

Julian looked across the room.

Sitting at the VIP table, Arthur Vance was sipping scotch, laughing loudly with a city councilman, pretending everything was under control. But Julian noticed his father’s left hand—the hand holding the glass—was shaking so violently that the ice cubes rattled against the crystal.

Julian reached into his pocket and felt the tiny, folded piece of paper the woman had given him.

He stood up from the head table.

“Julian? Where are you going?” Clara called out, her voice rising.

“I need the air,” Julian said flatly.

He turned away from his bride, stepped off the raised dais, and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the music and champagne behind as he headed toward the hotel’s rear exit into the dark, rainy night.
