Chapter 4 - The Patriarch's InterruptionBefore the word could fully leave Julian’s lips, a heavy, leather-gloved hand struck his shoulder from behind, pulling him back violently.

“Get away from him, you crazy old beggar!”
Arthur Vance—Julian’s father—stepped forward, cutting off the line of sight between Julian and the woman.
Arthur was sixty-five, tall, powerfully built, with silver hair and a tailored charcoal suit that radiated wealth and absolute authority. His face was flushed red with a mixture of disgust and calculated panic.
“Guards! What are you standing there for?!” Arthur barked, his voice echoing off the basilica’s granite columns. “Remove this trespasser from the property immediately! Call the police!”
The two security officers surged forward, grabbing the woman roughly by her dirty sleeves.
“Wait! Don’t touch her!” Julian yelled, snapping out of his daze. He reached out to grab one of the officer’s arms, but Arthur stepped firmly into his path, seizing Julian by his tuxedo lapels.
“Julian! Have you lost your mind?!” Arthur snapped in a fierce whisper, his eyes wild. “Look at her! She’s a street lunatic taking advantage of a high-profile wedding! She probably found that old picture online or stole it!”
“She knew about the photo, Dad!” Julian hissed back, his chest heaving. “The photo on my phone! How could a stranger know about a buried file in my private phone?!”
Across the steps, the guards yanked the old woman backward. She didn't fight them. She didn't scream or thrash. She kept her dark eyes fixed entirely on Julian as they dragged her away from the white flowers.
“Julian!” she called out, her hoarse voice cutting through Arthur’s furious tirade. “The green velvet tin under your bed! The three wooden soldier toys! Ask him where they came from!”
Julian froze.
A chill ran straight down his spine.
When he was seven years old, he had found a small green velvet box hidden in the back of his bedroom closet in the Vance estate. Inside were three hand-carved wooden soldier figures. When he had shown them to Arthur back then, his father had snatched the box away and burned it in the fireplace, claiming it was trash.
Julian looked at Arthur.
For the first time in his thirty-two years, Julian saw something behind his father’s eyes that had never been there before.
