Chapter 20 - The View from the WaterIt was an early autumn evening two years later.

The setting sun cast a warm, golden glow across the waters of Puget Sound, painting the sky in soft violet and amber.

On the porch of a cozy, craftsman-style waterfront home in Bainbridge Island, three wooden toy soldiers—carefully restored and polished—sat in a small green velvet box on a side table near the window.

In the backyard overlooking the beach, a tiny, two-year-old girl with dark curly hair and bright brown eyes was giggling as she chased sea gulls across the grass.

"Careful near the water, Maya!" Clara called out with a warm smile, sitting on the porch bench with a tray of fresh tea.

Julian walked out from the kitchen, wrapping his arms gently around Clara’s shoulders as they watched their daughter play in the sea breeze.

Beside them, sitting in a comfortable wooden rocking chair wrapped in a soft knit blanket, was Evelyn.

Maya ran up the porch steps, her tiny hands clutching a smooth white sea pebble she had found on the shore. She toddled directly over to Evelyn’s chair, holding up the stone with a triumphant grin.

"For you, Grandma!" Maya chirped.

Evelyn’s face lit up with an infinite, beautiful warmth. She leaned down, taking the tiny stone into her hands and placing a gentle kiss on her granddaughter's forehead.

"Thank you, my little star," Evelyn whispered softly, pulling the little girl into her lap.

Julian sat on the porch railing, looking at his wife, his daughter, and the mother who had given up thirty years of her life to ensure he was safe.

There were no more lies, no more hidden photos, and no more shadows from the past. The ocean wind blew gently through the pine trees, carrying with it the sweet, peaceful promise of a future built entirely on love, truth, and an unbroken bond.

Julian smiled, taking his mother's hand in his own.

They were finally home.
