Chapter 2 - The Scanned MemoryJulian’s eyes snapped up from the slip of paper to the woman’s face.

She stood silent, her breathing steady despite the harsh sea wind blowing across the steps. She offered no explanation, no grand speech.
"Julian? What is this? Who is she?" Clara whispered, taking a cautious step forward and clutching Julian's arm. "Is she asking for money? Should I call security?"
Julian didn't answer her. The world around him seemed to lose its sound. The rustle of expensive fabrics, the murmurs of his wealthy father behind him, the distant chime of church bells—everything faded into a low, muffled hum.
Slowly, almost mechanically, Julian reached inside his tailored tux jacket and pulled out his encrypted iPhone.
His bride leaned closer, her perfume sweet and suffocating against his shoulder.
Julian unlocked the device and opened his native Photos app. He tapped the "Favorites" tab—a section he rarely looked at, populated mostly by saved documents, floor plans, and a few high-resolution portraits of Clara.
Scroll down. Near the very top of the album, tucked away beneath hundreds of modern files, sat a low-resolution digital file uploaded years ago during an automated cloud migration.
One image was marked with a red heart.
Julian stared at the screen. His fingers felt numb. He tapped the thumbnail.
The image expanded.
It wasn't a modern digital photograph. It was an old, grainy scanned photo from the early 1990s.
A little boy, roughly five years old, stood outside a cramped, peeling brick apartment building in a poor industrial suburb. The boy had a small scar near his chin, a crooked front tooth, and was wearing a bright blue hand-me-down coat.
Julian recognized himself instantly. He knew that scar—he had gotten it falling off a swing set when he was little.
But he wasn’t alone in the picture.
The five-year-old boy's tiny hand was wrapped tightly around the fingers of a young, healthy, radiant woman. She wore a simple canvas jacket, her brown hair falling softly around her shoulders, smiling down at the boy with unmistakable, infinite love.
Julian slowly lifted his head from the screen.
He looked at the ragged, shivering woman standing on the stone steps before him.
He looked back at the phone screen.
The features matched. The nose. The deep-set dark eyes. The slight arch of the brow. The young, beaming mother in the thirty-year-old photo was the broken, destitute woman standing in front of him in a frayed coat.
Behind him, Clara saw the photo over his arm.
Her hand trembled. Her fingers loosened around her bouquet of rare white orchids.

The heavy bouquet slipped from her grasp, tumbling down through the air and landing softly across the cold, petal-strewn stone steps.
Julian didn't even notice the flowers hit the floor.
