Chapter 8 - The Thirty-Year LieEvelyn pointed to the small wooden chair by the desk. Julian sat down, his large frame looking out of place in the cramped room.

"In 1993," Evelyn began, her voice steady and echoing with decades of suppressed pain, "I was a twenty-four-year-old nurse working night shifts at Harborview. Your father wasn't a billionaire back then—he was an ambitious, cutthroat property developer who was drowning in millions of dollars of bad debt."
Julian listened, his hands clenched tightly on his knees.
"We lived in a tiny two-bedroom apartment in South Park," she continued, a faint smile touching her lips as she looked at him. "We didn't have money for expensive toys, so I carved three wooden soldiers out of pine blocks for your fifth birthday. You kept them in a green velvet box under your bed."
Julian’s breath hitched.
"Arthur’s firm was weeks away from total bankruptcy," Evelyn said, her eyes darkening. "Then, he found a way out. He met Eleanor Montgomery—the matriarch of the Montgomery shipping empire. She had influence, unlimited capital, and a daughter she wanted settled. But Eleanor made one thing clear to Arthur: she would never allow her family wealth to back a man burdened with a low-class, working-wife and a child from a poor neighborhood."
"No..." Julian whispered, the horror creeping into his chest. "No, my father wouldn't..."
"He did," Evelyn said flatly. "Arthur realized I was an obstacle to the life he wanted. One night in October 1994, I was driving home from my shift when a heavy black truck rammed my car off the road near the docks. I didn't die, Julian... but when I woke up three weeks later in a private psychiatric facility in eastern Washington, I found out Arthur had used his connections to sign involuntary commitment papers, claiming I was violently unstable and a danger to you."
Tears began to spill down Evelyn's weathered cheeks.
"By the time I managed to get out two years later, Arthur had declared me legally dead, erased my marriage certificate, changed your middle name, and moved you into the Montgomery estate. Every time I tried to approach you, Arthur's lawyers and security officers threatened to put me back in that institution or have me arrested. He told me that if I ever tried to tell you the truth, he would ruin your life before it even started."

Julian stared at her, the horrific reality crashing down upon him like a tidal wave.
His entire life—his pristine education, his elite social status, his marriage to Clara—was built on the deliberate, cold-blooded destruction of his mother's existence.
