The silence inside the high-rise penthouse was suffused with terror.
Outside, the Seattle skyline glimmered in cool blue and silver light. Inside, Thomas stood over Elena’s wheelchair, his leather-gloved hands rested casually in his pockets, waiting for her compliance.
"You think I'm helpless, Thomas," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, measured rhythm as she stared at the digital tablet in her lap. "You think because I sit in this chair, I am trapped."
"You are trapped, Elena," Thomas replied smoothly, taking a small silver vial from his coat pocket. "An odorless cardiac toxin. It leaves no trace in a standard toxicology screen. If you press your thumb to the biometric scanner, you sign over the trust management rights, and you get to live out your days peacefully at your clinic. If you refuse, you suffer a sudden heart failure tonight. Either way, I win."
Elena’s fingers trembled over the tablet screen. But she wasn't panicking—she was calculating.
Years of working in emergency healthcare and managing high-stakes logistics had trained her mind to seek protocols under extreme pressure. On the lower edge of the master corporate tablet was a feature Thomas didn't know about—a silent emergency override designed by Vance Global’s digital security team, programmed to trigger if a biometric scan was held continuously for six seconds instead of a brief tap.
"My grandfather trusted you," Elena whispered, looking up into Thomas's cold eyes.
"Your grandfather was a tyrant who treated me like a glorified servant," Thomas spat, his composure cracking for a brief second. "Now scan your thumb."
Elena lowered her right thumb onto the glowing blue scanner.
One second... two seconds... three seconds...
"Good girl," Thomas murmured, leaning in to watch the screen.
