Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Accusation

Elena spent the rest of the afternoon in a state of quiet panic. The fog rolling off the Long Island Sound mirrored the bleak uncertainty in her mind. Though she knew she was innocent of any wrongdoing, the memory of that tragic night three years ago was a blurred nightmare of alarm bells, rushing doctors, and crying infants.
When Alexander returned from Manhattan that evening, he immediately noticed the tension in her posture. He found her standing by the nursery window, watching Noah sleep.
"Elena," Alexander said softly, stepping into the dim room and placing a gentle hand on the small of her back. "Security reported Victoria's SUV near the perimeter gates today. Did she approach you?"
Elena turned to face him, her hands trembling as she held her elbows. "Alexander... she said something terrible. She threatened to file a police report claiming I was involved in your wife's death."
Alexander’s eyes narrowed, a flash of cold fury passing over his features. "That is complete madness. My wife died from severe amniotic fluid embolism during an emergency surgery. It was a tragic medical catastrophe."

"I was a junior student nurse," Elena whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I was tasked with assisting the surgical prep and then caring for the newborn in the adjoining room. But what if she falsifies records? What if she uses her connections to drag my name through the mud and ruin everything you’ve built for Noah?"
Alexander stepped closer, taking her hands in his firm, warm grip. "Listen to me carefully, Elena. I spent three years investigating every doctor, nurse, and piece of equipment in that operating room. I know your record. I know you stayed behind in the NICU purely out of compassion when everyone else panicked. I will not let a bitter socialite twist your kindness into a weapon."
