Chapter 8 - The Gala of Whispers

Despite the corporate victory, social media and news outlets were ablaze with rumors regarding the "Maid of the Sterling Estate." To silence the press and protect Elena’s dignity, Alexander organized a charity gala for the Sterling Foundation at the Metropolitan Art Museum.
When the sleek black limousine pulled up to the red carpet, flashbulbs exploded like a thunderstorm.
Alexander stepped out first, wearing a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo. He turned and offered his hand to Elena.
Gasps rippled through the crowd of reporters. Elena stepped out wearing an emerald green silk gown with a modest neckline, her dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small pearl pins. She looked radiant, elegant, and completely transformed, yet her eyes remained grounded and sincere.
As they walked through the grand hall, high-society guests whispered behind champagne glasses.
"Look at her... trying to play the lady of the house," a wealthy socialite scoffed quietly.
Alexander felt Elena’s hand tense around his arm. He paused in the middle of the hall, covered her hand with his own, and leaned down toward her ear.
"Ignore them," Alexander whispered gently. "None of these people have ever saved a life or loved with an open heart. You belong here more than any of them."

Elena looked up into his grey eyes, finding an unshakeable strength within them. She took a deep breath, stood tall, and smiled.
Later that evening, when the foundation announced a $10 million donation to pediatric nursing scholarships in Elena’s name, the room erupted into genuine applause. For the first time, the elite world had no choice but to respect the young woman who had won the heart of the Sterling family.
