News of Alexander Sterling’s engagement to a former nurse and maid sent shockwaves through the highest corridors of international high society. While the public celebrated the fairytale romance, the old-money dynasties of New York and New England viewed Elena as an intruder who had stripped away their long-held leverage over the Sterling empire.
In a penthouse overlooking Central Park, Victoria Vance sat across from three influential matriarchs of the Manhattan elite. Though her father’s company was crippled, Victoria still held a weapon: social exile.
"She may have Alexander wrapped around her finger," Victoria said, stirring her tea with a silver spoon, "but a wedding requires acceptance. If the elite boycott the ceremony, the Sterling name becomes a laughingstock, and Alexander’s shareholders will panic over the instability."
Two weeks later, invitations printed on handmade parchment with gold leaf were dispatched to two hundred of the world's most powerful families. Within days, polite rejection letters began pouring into the Sterling estate. Prior commitments in Europe. Seasonal travel to the Alps. Elena sat at the polished oak table in the estate's morning room, surrounded by dozens of decline notices. Her heart ached, not for herself, but for Alexander and Noah.
"They are trying to punish you for choosing me," Elena whispered as Alexander walked in, placing his hands gently on her shoulders.
