Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

Morning brought a heavy, restless quiet to the Sterling estate. Margaret Sterling had departed for Maine before sunrise, leaving behind an atmosphere charged with unsaid words.
Elena sat in the sunlit library, an open medical textbook on her lap, yet her eyes kept wandering toward the manicured gardens outside. Although her new quarters were luxurious and her mother’s medical care had been secured, the transition from servant to honored member of the household felt surreal.
"You aren't reading," a voice murmured from the doorway.
Alexander walked into the room, holding two cups of coffee. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking less like a ruthless billionaire and more like a man burdened by the weight of his own empire. He handed a cup to Elena before taking a seat across from her.
"I keep waiting for someone to wake me up," Elena admitted softly, clutching the warm porcelain cup. "A week ago, I was scrubbing marble floors. Now I sit in a library holding an open book while doctors care for my mother."
"You earned every bit of this, Elena," Alexander said, his grey eyes piercingly earnest. "Three years ago, you gave Noah the warmth I was too broken to offer. I was so consumed by grief after my wife's death that I retreated into my work, leaving Noah surrounded by monitors, doctors, and cold walls."
Before Elena could answer, the library doors flew open. Noah dashed inside, wearing his little backpack, and threw his arms around Elena's knees.

"Look, Mommy!" Noah beamed, holding up a drawing of three figures hand-in-hand under a yellow sun. "My tutor said I drew the sun very well!"
Alexander watched them, a small, genuine smile gracing his lips for the first time in years. Yet, deep down, he knew the peace was fragile. The Vance family held major stakes in Sterling logistics, and Victoria was not a woman to accept defeat quietly.
