Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mansion

Living in the West Wing of the Sterling estate was a world away from the servant quarters Elena had occupied forty-eight hours prior.

Her new room was a sunlit suite overlooking the rose gardens, filled with soft cashmere sweaters, silk robes, and shelves of medical textbooks provided by Alexander's staff. Yet, despite the luxury, Elena felt the cold eyes of the household watching her every move.

Margaret Sterling made her displeasure known immediately.

"Do not mistake my son's grief-driven sentimentality for permanent affection, girl," Margaret warned one morning in the grand foyer, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper while Noah was in art class. "You are a glorified nanny. The moment Noah grows out of this phase, you will be cast back out onto the street where you belong."

"I am here for Noah's well-being, Mrs. Sterling," Elena replied quietly, holding her head high. "Not for your approval."

"We shall see how long your little fairy tale lasts," Margaret sneered before turning on her heel.

That evening, a severe thunderstorm rolled over the estate. Lightning illuminated the French doors of Noah's bedroom, sending violent booms of thunder echoing through the halls.

Elena immediately ran down the long corridor toward the nursery wing. But as she reached the heavy oak door of Noah's room, she heard frantic shouting from inside.

She threw the door open.

Noah was huddled in the corner of his bed, hyperventilating, his small chest heaving violently as he clutched his oxygen monitor. Standing over him was Victoria Vance, who had bribed her way past the estate gates with Margaret’s help.

Victoria was holding a small, silver music box, pressing the play button repeatedly while trying to pull Noah toward her. "Listen to the music, Noah! Look at me! Tell your father you want me here!"

"Get away from him!" Elena yelled, rushing across the room.
