Chapter 9 - Whispers of the Heart

Late that night, after returning from the gala, the estate fell into a quiet hush.
Elena walked up to the nursery to check on Noah. The little boy was fast asleep, his arm wrapped tightly around a plush bear, breathing peacefully under the soft glow of a nightlight.
As she gently pulled the blanket over his shoulders, she heard quiet footsteps behind her. Alexander was standing in the doorway, his tie loosened and his jacket removed.
"He hasn't had a single nightmare since you moved to the West Wing," Alexander said softly, stepping into the room.
"He just needed to feel safe," Elena replied, turning to face him. "Children know when they are truly loved, Alexander. You gave him everything money could buy, but he needed a heart to hold onto."
They walked out onto the private terrace overlooking the moonlit gardens. The crisp night air stirred the soft fabric of Elena’s dress.
"I spent three years hiding behind work because I was terrified of failing him," Alexander confessed, leaning against the stone balustrade. "When my wife died, a part of me shut down forever. I thought I would never feel warmth again."
He turned to face Elena, his eyes dark with raw emotion.
"Until the night you stepped across that ballroom floor," he whispered.
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "Alexander..."

He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, deliberate, and full of reverence.
"I didn't bring you here just because Noah needed you, Elena," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. "I brought you here because I needed you, too."
